im thinking about opening a small project studio and i was woundering if the mackie cfx20 series is a good deal are the efects any good im decideing between that and the alesis studio 32 which one would you pick.

I have a mackie 1604vlz. You really cant go wrong with a Mackie. Everyone who has one seems to enjoy it as much as me. I've never used the cfx, though. I think it just adds the eq and effects built on. Sounds cool to me.

I have an A-32,A-24 and a used 1202VlZ and the pres'on the 1202 are way better than my Alesis. Check out either a 1402 or a 1642 by Mackies. The CFX 's are more geared for live sound as these boards have there own built in effects (and as their own catalog states).
Just stay away from Behringer mixers!!!!!!!!!

my band currently uses a CFX 20 at our shows. It is definatly a great live mixer, all things considered. However, I would suggest you look at a few other boards that are about the same price before deciding this is what you want to record on. I personally would suggest an Allen and Heath or a good Spirit for recording over the mackie, but I know many people that are happy with their 1604's.

BTW, what are you recording on?

Spirit SX, 12 mic pre's, inserts on all mono channels, direct outs on the first 8, one sub group. I think its under $700 american.

Its a very cool mixer for the money.

I own a Mackie 1402VLZ and it's great with digital recording. Very quiet. The CFX20 I believe is for more live situations. But then again, it wouldn't be bad to start out with so you don't have to buy any outboard effects processors right away. I would still go with Mackie. If your building a small studio, think about expansion too...

The mackie 1604vlz is rock solid and if you are new to recording the manual is great, giving some real world examples.I dont think the cfx was ever geared towards the studio but for live gigs. I think the mackie pre's will out perform everyone else in its price range.
