Which mic pre-amp?

I want to buy a mic and connect it to
my PC sound card and not spend a ton
of money. I'm assuming combining a
dynamic mic with a pre-amp would be
cheaper than any condenser mic option,
so the question is, what kind of decent pre-amp can I get for 50-100 bucks? (I
assume a mixer is impossible at that price.)
One option I've found is the 3-input ST-MMX3
from Radio Design Labs, with a list price of
about $120. Any comments?

Behringer has some cheap mixers that sound decent. Check those out (but get a tube pre-amp down the road, for sure)

By spending a bit more you might save yourself some money in the long run.

Think about it, it does make sense.

for $120 you aren't going to get a preamp that's any better than the one in your soundcard - I'd wait till I could afford the behringer or the like where you'll also get a decent mixer as well.

Decent-Cheap is an oxymoron in this case I think.
You can get one to make sound but pay more to be happy and excited about it. It doesn't hurt to do both over time. That way you will be getting the best sound out of the cheaper unit and appreciate the better one when you can afford it. This is what I use now,on a VS1680, but it's designed with the PC in mind. You need a dig in dig out card in the PC to make it perfect. http://www.mindprint.com Envoice.

Try the Audio Buddy MIC Preamp/Direct box. http://www.midiman.com/midiman/html/products/audibudy.htm

This is a great little box, that even includes Phantom power! I was a little skeptical when I first bought it, but I figure for $100 I couldn't go wrong. The first time I used it to record a live performance, I was simply blown away. The pre-amp was very clean and didn't color the sound one bit (that's good!). Further, I couldn't detect any noise from this thing. It's as clean as they come.

This great little box is portable and very versatile. I've used the ART MP1 before, and to me, the Audio Buddy sounded better - cleaner.
