what is the best mic for hi hat recording? don't want to pick up too much of anything else. and some suggestions on setup (pointing, distance, etc, etc.) are welcome.

Man, I just want to chime in and say how much I love hi-hat records. I mean, just the hi-hat and nothing else. The "chick" and the "other sound that hats make"...just heaven to my ears. I wish they would make "hi-hat" sections in record stores. I once knew a guy who knew a guy who knew then engineer on The White Album and he got us a disc of just the hat track, soloed...omg, frickin' sweet!!!!

I also like solo cowbell records.

Oh, and regardless of bleed, the SM81 is a pretty good mic for hat.

I wish that I had the bread to buy a mic for every specific purpose.........this is my hi hat mic, this is my xylophone mic, this is my cricket mic......... :D

I love mics. I wish I had them all. Even the behringers.

Why anyone would actually feel that they needed a mic specifically for hi-hat ... is beyond me. But they do.

Maybe this guy shares Scrub's hi hat fetish?

I use the phase cancellation from the hi-hat mic to actually make it quieter (& crappier sounding). :D

I never mic the hi hat. But some do.

The combination of top snare, OH and Ambient mics usually provides more HH than you need or want.

alternative, rock, hard rock, metal, who can say? and by the way glad to see there are no shortage of smart asse...excuse me, people posting.

yea no shit..the guy asked a pretty valid question to me. Ive seen a lot of decent drum micing techniques with the hi-hat miced.

DO THEY STILL MAKE (oops, Caps) AT-33R's? I think thats what they are called anyway, those were great!

i always mic the hi hat. it's just out of habit. i like turning it to a good level and alwyas having eveyr cymbal being heard so well.

i use a sm57. but i know theres bette rout there.

i might go out and buy a 3rd at2020 and use one for the hi hat, suppsoedly it's really good with the hi hats too. i wana test that out next time...

I'll chime in with the Shure SM-81 SDC. If you buy a pair of them, you can also use them for acoustic guitar, or for overheads if you decide you don't need to mic the hat.

your the type of guy who loves the smell of his farts.

I use 8 Mics to Mic my 5 Piece and never had the need to Mic the Hi-Hat ...

My Snare mic and my Overheads pick up enough of my Hi-Hats so i don"t need to mic them ...They sometimes pick up too much of my Hi hat so i will sometimes put tape over the top of the Snare mic to Try to muffle the sound of the hi-Hat....i use some extremely cheapo hi-hats that are quite loud and cut through everything else which i probably wouldn"t have to do if I had proper Hi-Hats....

I would suggest maybe a SDC or even a Good electret Condenser both of which will pick up a very detailed Hi hat sound ....

Cheers

i guess that some people don't worry about the possibility of panning something they record, per say, the hi hat.
