Joe pass is hard to beat for the money. I have owned one for more than 10 years and love it. Well made, nice dimensions for an archtop, and the action and intonation are a joy to play.
My JP rings like a bell. A very nice Korean made guitar.
If you have about 1K, then a used Hamer USA Newport simply cannot be beat for the price. Fit and finish on the USA Hamers is as good as anything I own, and I have several guitars that cost over 3K.

Tradition is an American company with a country flair. Their guitars are Korean and I have played them, they are what you would expect. They have a jazz hollow body model. I recommend looking at them as their prices are really nice at my local music store. I am planning on buying one of their PRS models semi hollow should come in at $500.
Count me in as a newly converted Epiphone fan. I boought an Artcore and took it back the next day. It just wasn't (flame away) very easily playable to me. I bought a Sheraton II instead, which I love.
check around and see how you like em, go from there.... if you can get into a Sam Ash or guitar center and play as many of them as you can then have at it... myself its a Gretsch hollow body and a Fender Twin!
but the Joe Pass is awesome if you put flat wound strings on the sucker!
