Which Guitarist Influenced You?

How come no one is saying "Your guy sucks. My guy is way better!"?

I'm asking for a good flaming but oh well.

The fact is, I would not be where i was today musically if it were nto for Green Day. Obviously after I got into bass, and then guitar, i found more musically gifted inspirations, but I still owe alot of my musical talents to them for getting me into music in the first place.

As far as actual influence, Tom Morello would probably be a guess after listening to me jam, a little bit of Angus, Neil Young, Oasis, Beatles, RHCP, even the Edge. I'm not a naturally good guitar player, so I am determined to use everything available to me to best accent a song, sort of like what Edge does with his effects. I know there has been big arguements about him before, but some of us just can;t cut it with a guitar and an amp  . Bass wise, i like listening to some crazy techno and dance stuff every now and then for inspiration. Jesse F. Keeler of Death From Above 1979 is probably one of my favourites, next to Mike from Green Day :D haha.

marshall, good call with the RHCP

Pete Townsend and John Lennon inspired me to pick up an electric.
I'm really a rhythm guitatist, my lead sucks big time. But that doesn't mean I wasn't influenced by stuff I can't play-

Jorma Kaukonen
Alvin Lee
John McLaughlin
Al DiMeola
Charlie Christian
B.B. King
The Eagles (pretty much all of them)

There are a host of acoustic influences as well, running the gamut from Roy Clark to Melanie Safka, Dan Fogelberg and Andre Segovia. In the end, though, the transformation from kid with a folk guitar to gigging for a living was all about THe Who and the Beatles. I confess that unlike the many shredders on this board, I never had any use for metal or punk.-Richie

You guys make me realize how old im getting. I was trying to copy licks by Carl Prekins and Chuck Berry before most of you were born. I like to think that more guitarists inspired me than influenced my playing. Over the years I,ve learned so many licks from so many artists it's hard to pin it down. Anyway my list is something like this....George Harrison/John Lennon I think as a teen I learned most of the Beatle's tunes, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Joe Walsh/Glenn Fry all those Eagles tunes are bound to have had an influence, Carlos Santana, Mark Knoffler and countless others. I think every song i ever learned helped to shape the way I play, of course those I played a lot had the greatest affect.

I started playing guitar thanks to John Williams, Brian May and Loudon Wainwright III.

As the years have gone on I've been most influenced by...
Marc Ribot
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Blixa Bargeld
Dave Gilmour
Glen Frey/Joe Walsh/The Eagles in general (as people have said above)

and my latest inspiration is Lenny Breau :)

B.B. King
Neil Young
J Mascis

Oh, "your guy sucks...my guys are better." :p

Originally, it was my buddy who had a guitar, and I really wanted to learn it as well. I was only about 13 years old at the time. There was never really one single guitarist that inspired me to pick up the guitar and learn, but I recently saw a guitarist play by the name of Andy Sheppard, and he was incredible. So he is definitly a big inspiration to my playing now.

Has Randy been forgotten by the new generation?

Randy Rhoades - Tribute I wore out the tape, the CD and the tab book for that one. I knew every note by heart by the time I graduated high school.
Randy Rhoads: 2 points...Three 6 Mafia; 17 points

Hardly any mention of Randy or Zakk Wylde in here...I"m absolutly stunned.

Probably because he only has 3 licks that he drowns in distortion. I got bored of him soooo fast.

Kirk Hammett in his early days
Dimebag
Trey Azegthoth - Morbid Angel
The guy from decapitated
Jimmy Page (very out of place here lol)

Zakk Wylde freakin kicks ass. But I think most of us here are citing influences that Zakk himself was probably influenced by. On a site with a younger demographic like guitars101, you get a lot more Zakk, Dime, Alexi Laiho, etc....

Are we discussing the most influencial now or the best?

Overall, I'd say Lifeson is the biggest influence. Gilmour next and Barre a distant third.

Awesome. When I first started playing, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, and Moving Pictures were practically worn out by the time I learned the licks that I absolutely HAD to learn.

Then....I heard "Thick as a Brick" a couple of years later and.....well...still haven't got that one down (all 45 minutes of it anyway!).

Cheers,

Buzz Osbourne/Melvins, Fantomas

that's it, the straight dope. No jive.

when I was 6 (1986) I saw footage of Jimi Hendrix at Monterey along with seeing crossroads the movie (not Britney Spears). I was also into Bill Haley & the Comets, Dizzy Gillespie goes to college & the Steve Miller Band OH YEAH & Chick Webb, all around the same time

& that got me into electric guitar & latterly classical, although I lacked the dedication to fulfill my potential as a classical player it was a very good education all round (I was 13-14 when I stopped through a want to play football & chase bouncing fleshy things called girls)

Man, it's cool to see Alex Lifeson mentioned. I broke into some 'Limelight' while practicing a few nights ago and just love old Rush.

I was in 6th grade when the Beatles came to America and I've been hooked ever since. They were my first influence, followed by:

Clapton
Knofler
Gilmore
Eric Johnson
Robert Cray
and more recently:
Al Pettiway
Lawrence Juber
