Hi all,
I own an Alesis SR16, very good instrument but very old too.
I would like to change it for something newer. I'm a bass player, and I play funk-jazz instrumental music (Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller...).
Which is the best drum machine on the market now? (similar to Alesis SR16). Boss DR670? Zoom?
Thanks.
Luca

if you have a pc look at the free hotstepper sometime. uses proper audio samples. you could rent many different drum machines and sample their sounds using a recording program like i use powertracks from pgmusic.com.
then bring the samples into hotstepper for generating all msorts of different groves then export into powertracks the drum tracks , and add 46 tracks of vocals, instruments or anything else.
and then mix down and do a cd of your song.
just an idea. i mention this as drum boxes get obsolete so quickly.

The Boss JS5 JamStation and Boss DR670 Dr Rhythm Drum Machine are pretty nice units. I've spent some time demo-ing both of them at a local store.

If you are planning on recording, there are other options besides using your PC. I didn't catch from your post if you just need a machine to jam along with, or you're looking to do something more.

I've had an SR16 for at least 10 years or more, and still use it. Yeah, the sounds are a bit outdated. I use it through MIDI as a trigger for samples on my computer. While the SR16 may be "obsolete", I feel that the BOSS units could hold up well. Yeah, you can't change the samples in them for newer or "fresher" sounds, but the sounds are great and this units have good functionality.

You're right,
well, I use it for home recording on a PC with Cakewalk Home Studio 2004 XL. I prefer standalone drum machines 'cause actually I'm a little bit lazy and don't understand/like very much midi-sequencer and stuff like that etc... I don't want to spend much time on programming on drums section, I'd like something easy and intuitive, as Alesis SR 16 is. More pattern, more sounds...
Thanks

my favourite drum machine is danny carey...a little hard to come by though...
so...whatever...disregard...

Zoom

I got a Zoom MRT3B and I really like it. $100, easy to program, complex writing ability, good sounds. Try it, you'll like it.

Isn't asking about drum machines in a drummers forum a bit like asking for a pork fried rice in a mosque?

bh - that floored me. made my day !
actually i prefer to record a real hot on the beat drummer with a combination of live drums and triggered samples if i could have my preference.

... I'm sure there are many open minded buddies in a mosque... much more than in a drummers forum, for sure!
Thanks anyway.

Ahh sorry.

Didn't realise your question was intended for open minded drummers only
