I will be recording about 24 stereo tracks
and about 10 midi tracks. i would like to use virtual instruments. Do I need the whole package?

You'll need at least Cubase VST 5.x. Cubasis will only give you 8 tracks. You don't need Score or VST/32 unless you want the features they give you. I don't remember what the max track count is for VST, but I've had 24 tracks going before.

Now when you say 24 stereo tracks, do you mean the equivilent of 48 mono tracks? I *think* the max track count in VST is 48, but it might be 36.

Doh! Just checked the website- its 72. You're golden.

Take care,
Chris

I also noticed that Cubase SL is also availible now. Its the lighter version of SX. If I remember correctly, it doesn't have true tape or score features and doesn't have the extended mixer (bummer), and a few other things- only 5 inserts per track (?), etc.

I don't know what they are charging for it, but it might be a good deal. I really prefer SX to VST, but SX is expensive.

Take care,
Chris

"Cubasis will only give you 8 tracks"

On my version of Cubasis you can change midi tracks to audio, effectively giving me almost unlimited audio tracks. Well, I've only tried 12, but I can convert more if I want to.
