Hello,
I wanted to list my current studio/live gear and I would like everyone's opinion on where to upgrade.

I know the way rooms are tuned have a lot to do with recording, but lets put rooms aside, as my room is being remodeled next week
I want to start to purchase higher level gear and get out of the home user/pro sumer market

I've been looking at a pair of AKG 414s, a pair of Mojave MA-200, and some pre amp upgrades

What would everyone here do?

Always, always, always - Monitoring and room first. No exceptions.

The greatest gear in the world is worth a bowl of warm sinus fluid in a bad room.

My rooms are going to start being remodeled next week.

I will add my monitoring to the equipment list.

I would sart with monitors in that case...and look at pawn shops...craigslist...hardly anything new is being used in major studios.

With luck you can pick up a pair of NS10s like mine.

I've don't get NS10s

I never could hear detail in them. They don't seem to share an actual representation of space. They are nowhere close to "full range"
I woofers always sounded very "textured" to me.
Like I was hearing more of the NS10 woofer, very papier

NS10's weren't used as mains - They're the "little, crappy speakers" that you'd check mixes on after Auratones weren't available anymore.

nice Rig.. I think the MA-200's would be a great score no matter what.. If I had all of what you have.. and I do currently use the digi 003 factory and intend to do this myself soon.. I would upgrade to an interface with better converters.. I'm looking at going to a rosetta right now.. or you could have your digi modded with better converters..

I'm not sure what your room will be like once it's remodeled, but I like the jbl lsr series with the "room mode correction".. They can be really accurate in most rooms and you mic them up with a supplied calibration mic.. with the push of one button.. you're ready to go after about 10 seconds of the monitiors adjusting to the room automatically..

my second step would be to ditch the behringer stuff.. that stuff will suck the good right out of anything good you have going on if you ask me.

I agree, I'd like to replace the 2 channels of berhinger tube pre and compressor with some combination of the
Universal Audio 610,
Universal Audio 710
Avalon U5
Summit Audio TLA-50
DBX 160a

I'd also like to grab a 2 API pre amps.

I am now able to max out all 18 channels of my pro tools rig, so I can track a full band live, now I want to grab some better pre-s and comps.
and maybe some more mics.

I wouldn't mind a royer 121 or a pair of them in fact

i guess that does say alot.

sort of like how I swear by the way my car sounds.

But they were *consistently* crappy. $600 for consistent speakers is cheap.

I paid $50 for mine...stupid pawnbroker thought they were bookshelf speakers...lol.

Ive seen JBL studio monitors for $100 at a pawn shop...you wont get that deal where they know what they have.

If you want a pair of lo-fi crap monitors for checking mixes, the Avantone Mixcube units serve the purpose pretty well and are cheaper (and more available) than NS10s and Auratones.

Before they put the "STUDIO MONITOR" sticker on them, they *were* bookshelf speakers.

They were cheap, typical bookshelf speakers for some time before Bob C. used them in a session and made them famous...

...and made them the top set of monitors in the buisness...is funny how every major studio has them on thier desks:rolleyes:

Massive master just PWNS everyones post with a tower of PRO talk jiber jaber. if i hear the words "its worth a bowl of warm sinus fluid" again im gona throw up.

if you want to upgrade i would suggest a real nice pre and an ace in the hole vocal mic.

but that depends on your recording software.

*On their desks* (in the worst possible place to have monitors in most cases). They're not the mains - They're the "little speakers" - just like Auratones used to be.

They're great for what they are. But they're not "good sounding" speakers...

Sorry about the "warm sinus fluid" thing. I just tried to think of something really worthless and - yes, perhaps a bit repulsive. I used to say "bowl of warm spit" instead...
