I'm beginning a career in audio engineering and sound design. I have 10 years of musical training, but I have no training with recording equipment or DAWs. So where should I start? I'm trying to take a recording class in the fall, but in the meantime I want to get familiar with the basics and what I need to get ahead. I've been watching tutorials and things on youtube about using DAWs and such, but they all seem to be for people who already know what they're doing...

Start by reading the manual for your DAW and doing as many tutorials as you can. You might want to check out the audio courses at lynda.com (click here for a free 7 day trial), , which are all great. The quality of info is a lot higher than what you'd typically find on YouTube. A good all around recording techniques book like Modern Recording Techniques can also be invaluable.
