i'm really suprised it took so long........
We all PM'd each other and said, "Let's give this one to giraffe." :D

Seriously, Nick, again. if you can get nothing but a click or pop out of the 112 on a kick, no matter where you place the mic, you either have a bad mic or you are seriously overdriving the preamp. (going twice...)

just listened to the clip.

still not convinced it's the mic. cause the snare bleed sounds fine.
i could definitely be wrong. but i think your kick just sucks.

try tuning it, maybe get a new head.

Here is a test, put a 57 in the kick in the same spot. If the 57 has more low end, the D112 is shot.

Yes - here is the clip -

I've been reading this thread since Nick started it, and I must say, NL, that was very interesting. Ok, carry on...

Is your kick drum tuned really low by any chance?
I'm not totally convinced it's the mic either.

If your kick is tuned really low, the fundamental frequency could be below the frequency range of your gear or of our ears. I have seen this happen before. Tune it higher... and viola, all of a sudden the bottom end shows up again.

No accidental highpass left engaged on your preamp or something either?

You say it sounds really low and muffled on your voice so obviously it is picking up low-end from other sources.
And yeah, that is how it normally sounds on vocals.

are you sure?

the D112 signal isnt clipping? I have never heard of when being broke. Pretty tuff mic. If I can ask, what is the signal chain? :)

Not trying to be funny or snide, but are you sure you're using the front side of the mic(the side with the wind screen and horizontal green stripe)? A lot of people who haven't used the D112 before make that mistake and set it up backwards. That would cause exactly the sounds you're describing; muffled, low output, no punch, etc.

Just a thought.

I've heard of broken d112's

A friend of mine in Minnesota was playing a gig - - -

The bass drum D112 just popped and has never worked right again.

I've had dynamics go because:

a There are tiny metal filings between the magnet and the diaphragm

b The tiny little wires inside of the diaphragm get severed somehow

ook im gonna try to answer as many questions that i can

1 yes i hate the way my bass drum sounds !!! it is tuned bad

2 i am using the right side

3 .....

heres my 2 cents: a. if your bass drum sounds bad, well, a mic aint gonna help. try an aquarian head or an evans. both make skins that will dramatically improve the sound of the drum regardless of quality. b. maybe its just me but i dont trust behringer. c. i like to place the d112 higher than where the beater hits the skin angled down toward it and away from the snare about 6" away from the skin. gets both the click and thump of the skin/drum. if its still getting this pop after all these people's suggestions, something is wrong with a piece of equipment in your chain. like that one guy said, try an sm57 and if it sounds decent, its a bad d112. i personally love mine for kick and bass amp.

i listened to your track. definitely not convinced its the mic either. sounds like a bad sounding bass drum. very possibly a bad preamp. you're getting volume and what seems to be a clear signal, that snare bleed is very clear and sounds like a snare. try a new head for your kick. they can be pricey but well worth it. you can look up ways to tune your drums online. its how i learned and my drums sound pretty good, live and recorded. also, how much are you driving your pre? the more the better, without clipping. (obviously)

and whats with all the leftys on here. statistically, thats crazy.

well i havent been able to test all these ideas yet i will today

the drum head is a brand new pinestripe .. its just tuned pretty bad :o

and i wanna try the 57 thing

Nick, the two things I'd be looking at would be the kick itself and the preamp. You might be clipping the pre's in the Berry. I went and saw a friends band one night and he was submixing his kit witha little Behringer mixer and he was having a similar problem. It was VERY easy to overload them and they'd pop when they clipped. Got another preamp you can try?
I'm not pimping tunes but I have a blues tune up on NowhereRadio now and at the end of the tune we do a crash and burn outro and you can hear just the kick for a bit. It's a 24" Ludwig kick with a D-112 inside. I think it sounds OK.
