Just wondering if you guys have any reliable sources. I'm looking for RMGi 911 1" in particular but maybe if we can get enough good places on here we can make it a sticky? ;)

When I go to the RMGi web page they just direct me to a bunch of their dealers and there is one in my area which I emailed already, but there is no way to order direct which I figured would be the best way to go about it...

Thanks,
-Barrett

In no particular order:

usrecordingmedia.com
splicit.com
reeldealpa.com --> has NOS Quantegy
quantegy-online.com -->""

AFAIK all mail order. reeldealpa.com also sells on ebay. See other threads here though for ebay sellers to avoid. One in particular....

I used to buy tape from Advance in San Diego (looks like you are in Chicago... ) But I think he is still in business, and still has Quantegy tape.

At the realdealpa site I'm interested in that 406....any thoughts on it. Its very cheap.....

It's very good tape, same as 456 just lower operating level before saturation occurs, a +3 tape vs +6 (for 456). It's bias compatible with 911 / 456. The 406 is under-appreciated (everyone wants 456) and can actually sound more natural and be easier on older machines. Remember that for a time, 406 was the highest level op tape and mega hits were made on it. Obviously, Quantegy branded is a stable binder so it's good all around. Remember that the one you're looking at is a "pancake" (just the tape on hubs but no reels). You'll need to provide your own.

Its looking like I'm going to try this 406 formula. I've just never dealt with a pancake before, so I'll have to buy an empty reel for it. What is the process like for putting it on to a reel?

Thanks for all the help cjacek,

http://www.splicit.com/index.html I really like. The cost for shipping is very low and they do not charge a minimum order fee. That's why I don't use US recording. As far as the pancake and reel install, it's very simple. You should have 3 (or sometimes more) Phillips screws, unscrew them, pull the top part of the reel off and line up the pancake with the barrel nuts on the bottom part of the reel and put on the top part of the reel. Next line up the top part of the reel to the pancake and barrel nuts and install the screws. Your done. I hope I didn't miss anything.

Seems simple enough, thanks for the help!

Good advice from dodgeaspen but I'd add to make certain that the empty reels have matching number of screws to the pancake hub. I don't know if wider tape formats have a standard amount of screws or vary from 3 to 5 but it's good to be aware of that. This means, if you have empty 5 screw reels but have a 3 screw hub pancake, you're out of luck.

Another point pertains to the cost. The pancake may sound like a good deal, especially if you already have empty reels. If you don't and need to buy some, it may add up to almost the price of a full reel of tape already on metal reels.

Yeah, I noticed my reels right now (BASF 911) have 6 screws actually....and I saw that an empty reel can be around 100 bucks making the cost of the tape and the reel close to 200 bucks for 1"

I think I wanna try out the RMGi first, which I've heard many mixed reviews of...

Thanks for all the help and keep the tape sources comin if you got em!

Best tape PERIOD

Go to U.S. Recording website and buy the ATR brand. I am using it on a TEAC X-1000R and a TEAC A-7300/2T. I love it!!!!!!

I ended up ordering from a company in texas named pro-tape. It was great, they had it shipped to my house in 2 days with just standard shipping. I ran the tape and recorded some drums and everything seems to be good. No residue on the heads afterwards, not squealin like some of my older tapes. And I'm talking about RMGi SM911 1" by the way.

So I had a good experience with them and would recommend em for anyone lookin to buy RMGi.

+1 for splicit. They have kind of a goofy way to order (instead of on the site, you send an email and then get invoiced), however, they've always been really responsive and shipped quickly. Once I even had a larger order (something goofy like 5 rolls of half inch and 6 of quarter inch and a roll of splicing tape) and they knocked down shipping and I think threw in the splicing tape for free. Theresa is who I deal with and will continue to deal with.

Good luck! I'm not sure if they had the tape laying around or they were bad batches but I didn't have much luck with them (Pro Tape that is). Things might have changed.

I've bought RMGI 468 from Full Compass Systems. Nice outfit good prices.

For 1" they have a minimum of 2 or 3 reels i think : /, but at a good price so If I ever need a few I'll definitely try em out.

I've ordered 1 reel a few times and have had no problems. I guess it might depend on the size of the reel.
