Where does pitch fit into rap?

cmon you guys...u should know better than to let an "outsider" that's bored trick you into this kinda discussion!

hell naw, it just came from the word "rap" as in "talking" indeed.

yea thats exactly what i was gonna say when i started reading this. rap = talking. and yes it is music and takes talent (tho theres talentless rappers making more money then most of us). rap uses more metaphors and more complex rhymeschemes and tells storys. it takes more lyrical talent for a true hiphop head to consider you a good rapper then it would for a rock head to like a rock group.

and for the most part tru hiphop-heads are the least likely to be close minded. while most rap-haters only hate it because of the fact its rap. who seems more ignorant at the end of it.

whether your rockin or rappin, just connect w/ the listener. Jerk off on your own time, no matter how talented of a jerk off you might be.
Too many musicians forget how important the listeners really are....

Where does pitch fit into rap
I pitch a fit when have to listen to too much of it.

Sorry, the joke was too easy. I couldn't help myself.

Do you get extra points for every capital letter you use in a sentence?

Just wondering......

It's funny, because when I think how easy it is to write my hip-hop music, I generally assume it must be 10 times easier to write rock or pop, or any other music. I mean, Hip-Hop utilizes at least 16 bars of lyrics per verse, where the bubble-gum rock like Nickelback might use 4 lines of lyrics over a full verse.

So it's safe to assume all rockers or other "musicians" are complete idiots, right? I mean wow... I use more lyrics in one verse than they write for a full song. What morons.

but like he said rock music is MUSIC not lyrics .. when i listen to a rock song most of the time i dont even listen to the lyrics. id be perfectley fine considering rap poetry instead of music... but then i guess poets would be kinda pissed too

All three aren't needed.

Welcome to 6th grade research.

Based on official definitions the entire world is using, one can assume those who perform anything rhythm based, is in fact a musician.

Whether you like it or not, and regardless of pitch*.

*This word never mentioned in either definition yet your only arguing point. How ironic.

It may not say the word "pitch" but you can't have a melody without a pitch, so don't be an idiot.

I'm jumping into this thread late...and therefore didn't read the whole thing....but the person who rhetorically asked whether Stephen King would be a musician if he read his books over a drunk track was on point.

A rapper is not a musician unless perhaps he plays the instruments behind his "vocals".

Someone on the street doing freestyle rapping is not a musician. There's no tones anywhere in that performance...and no, vocal inflections don't count.

Rythm And Poetry

This is just flat wrong.

Maybe it "stands" for that now, after someone made that to fit the letters of the word, but the word "rap" has historical signifigance.

Ancient story tellers (Greek, Roman....think The Oddysey..etc) told their stories in very theatrical ways and with a rythym of sorts to match their words. Their stories were called "rapsodes"....so you see.....the term is adapted from the ancient greeks.

i realize this was just a "study" on people's reactions, but this topic is something i had about a 2 hour discussion with someone a few days ago so i think i should put my take on it.

i love hip-hop/rap and perform/write/produce all my tracks. i play guitar, bass, and piano and have been in a jazz band, punk-rock band (which is will lead me to another discussion too), hardcore band, and a rap crue. i enjoy all types of music, but especially hip/hop, punk rock, and jazz. i will admit right now, i personally find it easier to write lyrics to a hip/hop song, performing it was a little work, but ive gotten better at that as well, and it sure didnt take nearly as long as it did to play bass, guitar, or piano. but does that take the art out of it? i dont think so at all. and this leads me to my other comment. theres a lot of people that will never doubt or question if the singer of a hardcore band (aka. someone screaming the entire time) is an 'artist/musician'. i personally find it a lot easier to write / sing a hardcore/punkrock song than it is to write / rap a hip-hop song. on that same note, i know people that have only been singing for MAYBE a year that can reach vocal dynamics like maynard from tool or cedric from mars volta. but these singers r some of the worst rappers (as ive heard them try before) ive ever heard.

so pretty much, i find it kinda obsurd to say that a truely successful rapper as far as skills go is not a musician and is not pursuing an art. my buddy that i was arguing with constantly said that he could create a "hot" hip-hop song in one day, but he would have to get other people to rap for him cuz he isnt into rapping... i found that kinda funny.

just my 2 cents. ps: dont judge an entire art of music on 5 songs u hear on the radio. a lot of popular rock-n-roll is VERY easy to create. turn on ur classic local rock n roll music station and listen to the simplicity in those songs, yet these are WELL REVERED MUSICIANS AND ARTISTS IN THE ROCK-N-ROLL ARTFORM.

Rap = talent = art

Freestyle. Ya should listen to rap freestyles that arent pre-written, ull see that great rappers are very witty rappin to instrumentals (sometimes in rap battles) /or without instrumentals (eg smack dvd), and will say/spit the smartest or slickest rhyme that make the crowd go "oooo" as they use methapors punches etc spontaneously. Thats talent, take jin for example, or posterboy. There are also others such as Rap City the Basement on BET (big tig freestylin wit the STARS such as luda or jayz). Other than freestyling, great tracks are also made and well-written. Thats the love right there, the voice that move people. Just make the body wanna move, and nod ya head..whether its a crunk track for clubbin, story raps/life lessons, love rhymes for ya girl, etc its all good man... haha

how come someone can throw out witty or slick rhymes when they're "freestylin", but probably 99% of those same people can't construct a sentence or spell correctly?

err..

i ont kno mckreel they just can.. dont make a bold statement and ask questions like that since u cant spit dope and ill rhymes. i think u need to see some great emcee battles wit the crowds goin on to get what i mean. so dont be all smartass whether a person can use a full sentence or watsoeva mann, so yeah. what i didnt write my reply in capital letters or spellin error u trippin? :o yeah im outtie. peacee
