for each pair of Toms, is there any advantageous placement point?

I've got a 10 and a 12 side by side, and 14/16 side by side. I'll figure this out as I start sound-checkin', I just wondered if there were some mythical rule of thumb.
 
get rid of half of your toms. seriously. it's better to have half as many good sounding toms in your recording than twice as many crappy sounding ones.

I agree with this.

You're probably not gonna get a real good close mic'd recording with one cardoid mic for two toms.

but....if you wanna try it, get it right between the two and up a good 6 inches or so.
 
That's kinda what I've been doing...split the diff and out about 8 inches. ;)
 
Well, one thing in my favor is that if I like these Audix mics, they're not real expensive to get two more.

I won't be micing the 8 incher. I don't really even hit it, it looks cool and it's a convenient place to put an ashtray! :D

I'm so fuckin' loaded I take leftovers to work for lunch, smoke Mavericks (ya ever heard of Mavericks? Me either), and blow dry kleenex tissues to get extra blows out of 'em! :D

I used to pull up the the bus stops and tell people, "Hey, gimme your bus money amd I'll cruise you wherever you're going!" :cool:

When I see folks butt a 1/2 smoke, I'm like, "dude...ya know if you save those up you can take the tobabcco out and roll it up in some Zags."

I was in Jack in da Box the other day and this chick was gettin' ready to dump a half a cheeseburger and a bunch of fries. I ran up to her and said, "That can's full, babe. Here...I'll take care of it." :o
