I was originally looking at the MBOX, but got some good advcie on the downfalls of it. I was then led to the Steinberg 4in 4 out interface..don't know the name...Does anyone have any recomendations or comments to lead me in the right direction...
I'm only looking to do acoustic/vocals/bass and maybe a small drum set(bass, snare hi hat ride)

I'd like for it to be 4 track at a time at least..
And be bundled with software...

Digi 002 rack. That's the cheapest Pro Tools option.

No, MBox is. And it sounds quite good.

EDIT nevermind, he wants 4 at a time.

next after that is 001 which you can find used for about $200 more than the mbox...out of curiousity what were the downsides to Mbox that made you say no?

before you complety throw out the idea of MBOX listen to this... Click here for a recording completly made with mbox... I just got my Mbox a few weeks ago and i had no previous knowledge of recording and im producing good recording from it i think... and i recently just purchased a mixer so i can use more than 2 mics for doing drums... reconsider mbox its awesome i love mine...

Unless you use a laptop you would be much better off with a PCI interface. The perfomance of USB and Firewire is pathetic when compared to the speed of PCI.
Check out this chart
http://www.mobl.com/expansion/pci/comparison/comp_speed.html

Im not sure what your trying to get at though... usb and fire wire being slow, how exactly is speed affecting anything... i record my parts its fine i press the play back button it plays it back right when i press it, it records right when i hit record... so how exactly does speed have anything to do with it... its not like when you record a performance you have to wait for the cpu to process it, it records as you play so what the hell does the speed of usb or firewire mean, please explain urself... maybe if you were talking storage for a harddrive but for a interface im not clear at all what your trying to say...

Well for one thing USB and Firewire do consume more CPU cycles. Also USB devices sometimes have problems depending on the amount of tracks that you try to record at one time.

I had a USB device once and had nothing but problems with it.

That being said, they are still handy devices as long as you have realistic expectations on what they are capable of.

I'm using a Firewire device (Tascam fw-1884) which has been rock solid for me.

oh, i dunno alot about that stuff, but i have my mbox and it works through USB and i havnt had a single problem with it yet... so im happy lol

Digidesign no longer makes a PCI solution for a reasonable price.
