What is your favorite solo or lead break within a song. One that made you want to pick up your axe and play??
My 2 favs are both by Kiss
1. Detroit Rock City
2. I Stole Your Love

The trade off between Ace and Paul on these two songs still gets me after all these years

Oh man..... how on earth are you supposed to pick one??!!

OK.....

Hotel California has got to be on the list.
Eddie's solo in "Beat It" is pretty happening.

I'll start with those two.

I guess you must mean favorite guitar and or bass solo, seeing as this is the guitar and bass forum...

It's hard to pick a favorite, but some that have stood the test of time for me are:
  • Clapton's solo on "Crossroads" from Cream's Wheel of Fire has to be one of the most perfect of all time -- even though I learned that it was edited down from a longer performance...
  • Jeff Beck playing on "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" from Blow By Blow is magnificent -- as it is most of the time. I'll mention another Beck gem -- "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" from Wired
  • John McLaughlin's solo on "Birds of Fire" from the Mahavishnu Orchestra album of the same name
  • Allan Holdsworth's solo on "Fred" from Believe It! by the New Tony Williams Lifetime
  • Jaco Pastorius's solo on "Havona" from Weather Report's Heavy Weather
  • Pat Martino's solo on "Along Came Betty" from Consciousness

Anything off Diary of a Madman or Tribute.Long Live Randy Rhodes!

I read a story one time where Randy said that the solos that he laid down for the songs on the DIARY album were just scratch solos and he had planned on going back into the studio to lay down the real solos but the record company released the album while they were on tour before he got a chance to do that. TOTALLY AWESOME!!! Randy was a BIG loss to the art of guitar playing!!!

The lead from "There's No One Like You" by the Scorps is also pretty great. Especially the solo that opens the song.

You got that right!!! Matthias Jabs is another of the unsung heros of my metal youth. All of the songs off of BLACKOUT had some great solos.

Oh Man Oh Man Oh Man ....

Floyd, Comfortably Numb...that got me away from tryna do 8 krigazigajillion notes a second, and try concentrating on getting more feel out of my playing.

also...

...the long ending solo thingy Tony Iommi does on Planet Caravan...just jamming out I think there.

Hey King,
I heard something along those lines too,Diary was rushed in the studio and never really completed.I think Ozzy said that.Randy had fire and emotion to go along with all his fret burning technique.

Lots to pick from as far as Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Burn is one of my fav solos there, as well Highway Star.

remember that song called FANTASY by Aldo Nova??
That one had a cool solo in it.

Larry LaLonde (Primus) from Bob's Party Time lounge. From the Rhinoplasty album. That guys just so smooth all the time its scary

If you're gonna bring up Free Bird might as well throw in Stairway to Heaven

If you are gonna bring up Skynard I would have to say I love the solos in CALL ME THE BREEZE or SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL better than FREEBIRD.

Another vote for Guitar Johnny on Birds of Fire.

AlChuck, much as I like Beck, I thought His Goodbye Pork Pie Hat solo was way cheesy - basically just proved that not only couldn't he solo over changes, but he wasn't even gonna try.

Other faves:

Kath - 25 or 6 to 4 (Chicago)
Trower - Day of the Eagle
SRV - Let's Dance (Bowie)
Beck - New Ways / Train Train
Carlton - Spiral (Crusaders)
Becker - My Old School (Steely Dan)
Baxter - Little Darlin' (Doobies)
Allman - One Way Out

and...

...the endless solo in Boz Scaggs' "Loan Me A Dime", Boz and Duane trading licks (was there a 3rd guy?), though I think I was digging the arrangement more than the solos.

There's also an Eric Gale solo from some CTI session that just knocks me out, and one of Jimi's solos from Band of Gypsys, but I forget which tune.

Oh yeah - Grover Washington's "Mr. Magic". Kind of overdone and cheesy as a tune, but Gale just shimmers on that one...
