what's your favorite drum sound?

SHADOW SHADOW SHADOW!

Drums = DJ Shadow.

if you haven't heard of him, he's a god. everyone likes his music, they just don't know it yet.

all the drum beats he samples are amazing. i saw him live few months ago at the bristol academy, he started by showing a short film that he and some other guy made about some old funk style drummer who he has sampled a lot of. they had him doing live battles with cut chemist (jurassic 5) and dj babu (dilated peoples) and he's about 80 years old!

:confused: I'm not sure how this is at all related to the topic...

I like DJ Shadow, but, unless I don' know better, he is by no means a drummer. and to credit him for drum sounds from things that he sampled is a discredit to all those who originally put the efforts forth to get those sounds on tape....and fooolish

maybe I just don't get your point:confused:

now illyB, that cat samples some great beats:D

you could say that your favorite drum sound is jazz, or rock, or RnB, synthesised or live, whatever. are any of these names of drummers? no.

a drum sound is what you like listening to or what you think is good. surly there is more than one drummer who you like?

saying that i like dj shadow for the drum beats he finds, is in no way saying that he can play the drums or that i am crediting him for that, it is just more of a specific sound that i like. instead of just saying hip-hop, i'm saying that my favorite drum sound is more specific -> DJ Shadow.

and to credit him for drum sounds from things that he sampled is a discredit to all those who originally put the efforts forth to get those sounds on tape....and fooolish

this is a common misconception when talking (to me) about sample based music. sure, if you were talking to someone who did not know that all of shadow's work is sample based, then what you say is fair. but, i know that he uses samples, and i do not think that this means he is no more talented. sure, he does not play any instruments on his tracks, but that's not what i appreciate him for. what i appreciate him for (and what everyone should) is the fact that he has dug up all these great old records, bringing them to my attention. when my parents (or other people of the older variety) listen to his records, they are like 'hey i know that, it's so and so'. that means i can go out and get the original, know what i'm looking for, and broaden both my musical knowledge and my appreciation for music other than hip-hop. if i didn't listen to dj shadow i could never have found that record. he should also be credited for his skills in arranging songs. when listening to a track, can you tell which bits are from different records, when part of the original records actually start or end? he makes everything fit together as if it was an original song, which is probably harder than arranging a song that you have written yourself, you can change each part to fit with other ones, he cannot.

another thing that i should mention is that in my last post i was meaning a specific drummer that dj shadow sampled, i don't know his name, that's all. fully read my post before you reply.

Therein lies the issue. We're not talking about beats. We're talking about who has the best sounding snare, kick, tom, etc... I'm a fan of DJ Shadow, but he's in no way responsible for the sound of the drums he samples.
 
if you're going to toss dj shadow into the mix you'll have to name all the players he sampled, not the man himself. he creates no drum sounds of his own, he just plays back the good ones.

no offense, but maybe you should fully read the thread before you reply....the thread was specifically referring to recorded drum sounds that we liked - not generic 'r&b drum sounds' or 'hip-hop drum sounds' or even drummers - just recorded drum sounds.

Counting Crows

August and Everything After has this amazing drum sound... So crisp, clean and defined.

I also like Tim Alexander's sound, off the Primus record "Tales from the Punchbowl".
 
I forgot to mention Tim Alexander as well. On "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" he uses those 18" kicks that are just punchy as hell. "Pork Soda" had a really nice drum sound as well (moved up to 20" kicks) - very natural and "unaffected" sounding.

led zep II had great tones!
i also like the sound of the Corrs drums most of the old stuff rocked the newer stuff i think was synthed on the last CD but still sounds ok i guess.
 
Many of these favorite drum sounds all have one common factor...

THE DRUM TECH!

Namly a great guy called Jeff Ocheltree. Also he designed and built many of the snare drums used on these favorite drummers albums.

AND Danny Carey uses a drum kit designed and built by this guy. Made from melted down paiste cymbals......
 
did you guys check out the drum sound on the new a perfect circle track imagine?

i heard the drummer is playing a 30 pounds bronze snare on the track, sounds sooo awesome

in my opinion that drum sound is terrible. they failed miserably at a bonham drum sound. i think they just didn't spend enough time on it.

i watched an interview about recording that record and they said they were recording a song in a day or 2 and then giving andy wallace the files to mix while they worked on another song for a day or 2.

Dark Side of the moon has one of the sweetest drumming sounds ever IMHO
Before I ever heard Dark side, elderly woman was my all time favourite drum sound as well (leash is good too)

Steve Gadd on Steely Dan's "Aja"

Steve Upton on Wishbone Ash's "Live in Tokyo" album (1978)

Paul DeLong on Kim Mitchell's "Akimbo Alogo" (Canadian release)

Chester Thompson on the double live Genesis "Seconds Out"
 
I'm not a big fan of cock rock but the drum sounds (guitars too) on "Waiting for the punchline" album by Extreme is out of this world. Big open solid drums and amazing cymbal sounds. Led Zepplin'ish vibe but with modern recording equipment. Grab a copy if you can find it, just don't tell your friends :D
 
White pony by Deftones. I think it is the first song. it starts with just drums. They are soo fat and crisp and have a nice reverb that brings them to life, and the crispest sheening cymbal rings for about 30 seconds! Brilliant.
 
My personal favorite drum sound of all time? The album "Romantic Warrior" by Return to Forever. Very punchy, and very clear. I love especially how the toms sound.

Lenny White was the drummer, but I don't know who the recording engineer was.

That album came to my mind, too! Not HiFi, but man does it drive the music along.

All big and full, and very clean.
