What's wrong with me?

Thats exactly what my old ProAmp does. I haven't seen another like it for years. Its sound is a cross between an AC30 and a Fender Twin. Very versatille. Sadly it's in need of some TLC these days and I'm no amp tech. The guy I've always used retired to Aus a few years back and I'm still in search of someone I can trust with my baby even though it's not worth much...except to me.

Interesting that you say that, Muttley, because I can get a very Fender Twin-like sound from the Top Boost channel. Blending a lot of Norm channel preamp gain into that gives a fat, Marshally sound. Very cool.

I keep meaning to check out a newer AC30 I just haven't had the time or money. You have just spurred me on. I ned to get rid of a couple of amps in any case, they just sit in the workshop waiting to move some air, they should really be out being played more often. I've fallen into that trap of going with what you know recently and playing safe..

New AC30 here I come.:D

I always thought SS was fine for clean tones. It's also good if you want really distorted tones, or processed tones.

Those two factors explain the '80s pretty well. I didn't know anybody with a tube amp, and there were plenty of people with LPs so I don't think cost was the issue. One guy I played with sometimes had a Fender Squire Bullet (back then they sucked REALLY bad) through a SS Marshall half-stack  I was happy when I got my Peavey stereo 2x12 with onboard chorus

Anyway, tubes are great for those in-between dirty tones. Even if you go to the trouble of germanium or LEDs, solid state just doesn't clip gracefully the way a tube does.

And those are all the really good tones :o

There's nothing wrong with you. Different gear for different players. If it works for you-use it. I get sick and tired of reading about wankers that have "this great vintage valve amp with all the mods etc etc" knowing they probably can't play for shit anyway.

True that...I love my line 6 spider...i'd love a tube amp, but just dont need the hassle right now when im getting good tones...however, line 6 has moderately crappy clean tones...wish they were better.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you but you also didn't indicate that you might have a hearing problem...just to be sure you might check with the doc. I'm thinking there's probably something wrong with your tube amp.:p

Meh...to each their own. If it sounds good and keeps you coming back for more, it must be a good thing.

Out of curiosity, what is the solid state amp?

I used to own a TSL100 head, myself (current rig's a Mesa Rectoverb 50, for perspective). Honestly, I think my practice/small jam amp, a Tech 21 Trademark-30, does the marshall thing better than any marshall I've ever played.

It's an AVT50 that he gave to me, then tried to take back.

I did not take it back! It's in the music room with the other amps.

Come on now boys, careful now' I know what you Irish boys are like when a family feud breaks out. Put the chair down and step away from the amp.:)

I think 32-20 is gonna get a new one. I suggest a bassman re-issue.

What's wrong with you? You're showing signs of individualism and ability to form opinions of your own without input or approval from others! This is bad, very very bad! You're going to have to go see a doctor or psychiatrist or something. I think there's medication for this that will get you back to following the general consensus in all facets of your life. Its a good thing that you thought to post here so we can all help you through this difficult time.

Now turn off that SS POS and go plug back into your valve amp and just strum the open strings for a couple of hours. Embrace the dissonance, hear the breakup. Feel the heat from the output section. See the glow of the tubes. You are getting sleepy...

It's a proven fact that blinkie lights = tone. It's science. You can't argue with that. :D

Kidding aside, whatever works for you. I'm personally not an AVT fan, but they're not without their devotees and really for me it's less the fact it's solid state (technically hybrid, which is a lot of my problem with it - I don't think the price increase over the MG's is warranted by a single 12AX7 in the pre) and more just that by and large I don't get on with Marshalls. I've heard some awesome sounds coming from them, but whenever I play one I find myself missing something...

Actually one thing I did do was change the marshall 12ax7 to a higher gain tube.

You'll come round when you get it out of your system :D

It does a Paul Weller / Clash sound way better than the TSL.

if your talking about the marshall 100watt TSL

i used to have one and would play out with my crate solid state amp because it had a nicer distortion at lower volumes

for recording .. smaller tube amps are usually the way to go because the signal breaks up alot easier @ lower volumes

It's the 50 watt combo, before they started the AVT x series.
