Ok man..I got a hold of charter and they gave me a new dns number...still did not work!! I'm out of options..maby Ill get some music done this way...lol!!!!
Typical tech support...giving YOU a new number would do nothing to fix the problem as hypothesized. *sigh*. Idiots.

What would work?
While not a true fix on their end, you should be able to bypass their problem by sending your browser to the following address:

http://92.48.72.5

This is the actual IP adress for the Gearslutz server. It's kind of like dialing it direct instead of using the domain name to find it.

If this works for you, and it should, then you have proof that there's a problem with the information in you provider's DNS (Domain Name System) server. The DNS server is is their directory that says that thisdomain.com is actually located at numeric IP address 1.2.3.4 and thatdomain.com is actually at IP address 5.6.7.8, and so forth. Every time you type in a web page name (or click on a link for one), your browser (among any other functions) queries your provider's DNS server to do a DNS lookup; i.e. find out the actual Internet address at which that domain name resides. It's just like looking up my name in a phone book to find out my street address or phone number.

If you have made sure that you have cleared out your browser cache and memory, and you can access all other sides you want, but can't get to gearslutz by their domain name, but you can get to it fine by dialing their IP address direct, that's a pretty strong indication that gearslutz's entry in your provider's DNS server could be wrong or the entry corrupted.

What you need to do to have your provider permanently correct the problem is to give them the information in the previous paragraph to this one, along with the following information about the gearslutz domain:

IP address:
92.48.72.5

Domain servers:
ns1.softlayer.com
ns2.softlayer.com

And you might want to let gearslutz know about it too.

delete all your cookies and temp internet files and passwords and everything..

then give it a go

I had to redo windows on a new hard drive yesterday so everything should be cleared out!!

Damn Im having gearslutz withdraws...I dont want to sound like a dick but that's where I spent most of my time online and this site just is not the same for some reason!!

never posted there -- just read.

and i was just playin around ;)

.... mostly... ;)

Hey..there are alot of ass holes over at gs..dont get me wrong..That is just the first place I knew of to talk and learn about this stuff and I just got comfortable over there I guess!!

I had a problem connecting to GS a few month back. The guys over there said it was an ISP issue (Verizon).
I could connect to them through a proxy server, hidemyass.com
It ended up fixing itself after a month or two.

You dialed the IP address directly and it still didn't work?

Call your provider with that info including all the info from my last post, and refuse to hang up until they have escalated the problem to someone who actually knows the difference between a DNS server and the hole in their ass. Be tough. First level support almost never knows anything these days.

Oh sure, leave out the key piece of evidence that you lost GS on the day that you installed new software, and leave that for only Perry Mason to know, just so he can look smart at the end of the show ;) :D.

Enjoy yourself, JD. We could use you more over here than they can over on GS, so don't be afraid to stop by sometime. As for me, between HR and working on my own website, I've no time for any more forums right now.

Besides, I'm just not that into gear, I've got too much self-respect to be a slut, and I try not to encourage the spelling of the plural of something with a "z" :D.

Good luck!
