If I am using a high end mic pre (I went with the Vintech) and a good sound card, what would I need a good ad/da converter for?

What is the use of having an ad/da?

I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death, I appreciate any links you may have.

Gracias

if you have a good preamp and soundcard you dont NEED another AD/DA converter, as your soundcard, I assume, had AD/DA converters.....

one might look for an external converter because they are looking for higher quality conversions, in the same way one might step up from a Shure SM57 to a NeumanU87 for vocals.....they are both microphones and do basically the same thing.....one just seems better tailored to do it than the other.....

you can take and clip recorded with your soundcard and a clip recorded through a Lucid converter (from exact sources) and play it back through good monitors.....the difference amy surprise you....it wont knock you out of your chair, but the clarity and subtle differences are there....

for someone like me, right now the difference doesnt justify the expense...the Delta converters do a good enough job for what im doing....whether or not you NEED them depends on what you are willing to spend and what quality of results you are after.....

The real question is, are the AD convertors on your soundcard good enough to justify the expense you did on the Vintech. Your chain is only as good as the lowest quality link in it. So here that would be either the soundsource :p , the mic or the AD... After the AD, all is handled digitally, so as long as there is no processing involved, everything is perfect, no quality loss here.

So what is the weakest link? Think it is the AD? Tried greening your CD's? :D

depends on what you call a "good sound card".....alot of people here are gear sluts...if you wanna become one thats fine.....but if you list most of your basic eqipment (from mics to monitors), maybe your converters arent the "weak link" Roel referred to.........the weak link could be your cables.....

look for a brand of cable called euro they make great mic and speaker cable buy your cable in bulk rolls then purchase the connectors you require neutrix xlr,s are what you need also ge their rca,s they are all self cleaning as well do not skimp out in this department also reasearch how long your lengths of lead will be this will save you wasting good cable purchase a good base station soldering iron and then get a diagram for soldering up balanced and unbalanced leads learn to do this and save your self heaps always keep your work tidy and neat dont rush making your leads follow the above and you cant go wrong
