Recording engineer\Mastering engineer

or as I call them

recorderist and mastererer...ist.

Recording Engineer & Mastering Engineer... Each has their separate job to do, some what similar, but just as much separate.

Mastering Engineers basically polish what the Recording Engineer & Producer laid down usually.

Actually

It would be recording engineer for tracking (and second or assistant engineer, who usually does the grunt work like mic placement), mixing engineer for, what else, mixing, and mastering engineer, likewise for mastering. Sometimes, especially in a small budget operation, the same person does all three things. The bigger the budget, the more specialization. This is especially true for mastering. Mastering involves a special skill set that generally requires the most experience. Even the biggest acts will sometimes delay the release of something until they can get the services of the big time mastering engineer of their choice.

Just an FYI.

Nah, nah!
The tracking is done by the tracker, the mixing is done by the mixer and the mastering is done by da master. (oh, if the latter also mixes then it's da
mix master - little kitchen appliance humour)

I've always heard the guy who sets up the mics and moves stuff around refered to as the "studio technician." I think some of the really big studios would call him the "grunt."
