What's the general consensus here on the BR-8?

I bought one used for $300 and I am very happy with the features. I don't use the onboard effects; when I record drums I pre mix them and send them to the BR-8 through the RCA's, and I do all my mastering on my computer. Basically I use it just for easy multitracking and use my other gear for tone shaping. I'm pretty happy with the results. Anyone agree, or am I living in the stone age?
 
I still use mine all the time, mostly for writing/recording my songs so that the band has a demo to listen. I like the COSM effects because they easy to use and I can tweak them.
 
Anyone know how similar those Boss effects are to the Roland VS effects?
 
They're the same, Boss is a spinoff of Roland. The Roland company was first all keyboard & the Boss was for guitars. The COSM effects were first design for the Roland guitar synthesizers and later used for the BOSS GT-3, GT-5 & GT-6 guitar prosessors. This lead to Roland/Boss adding the effects to the VS & BR recorders.
 
I really like some of the effects in my VS880EX. I would keep one around just for the effects.
 
The Boss and Roland recorders sound nothing alike.

The Boss stuff sounds like bad mp3.

Case in point, the Boss ME30 sounds nothing even remotely like the GT5 which was out at the same time.

Boss is Roland's budget version for po folks.
 
Blah blah blah, bad mp3s blah blah blah... why do you even post. It's the same thing over and over again. And btw, I've heard stuff recorded on the BR-8 that sounded better than some of the VS machines. It just depends if you know what you're doing.

The BR-8 sounds fine. It's not professional and I think we all know that, but you can get some nice sounding demos off of it. I record and mix on mine, don't use the COSM. I just don't like any of the effects. But I'm planning on finding some computer mixing software and then I'm just going to record on it and dump to the computer to mix.
 
New and shopping around...so, I was looking at the Boss 1180cd. If that's not "profesional", what's the least I could spend on something that was professional sounding and any suggestions? I was lookign for a budget around $1000 or less. 2 simul. tracks is okay, I'm mostly acoustic with pick and vocals with other tracks recorded and mixed later. Want a stand-alone machine with dcr, hard-drive, but with option to maybe use my computer for mixign later, but that's not where I want to start.

newacoustic - IMHO, the BR-1180CD is all you would need, you wouldn't need to mix on a computer. Very simple to use and has Mastering Tooks to create a pro sounding CD.
 
Dude..Ebay

Dude you can get some AWESOME recording gear on ebay for under $1000. I bought a barely used MINT condition Roland VS 1680 on there for $725! thats 8 track simultaneous recording man. Do yourself a favor and check out ebay.com and look at multitrack recorders...My friend has an 1180cd, it sounds great, but that's because he uses a high end mackie mixing console with it..trust me, go on ebay, and get something better for your money!! www.jonross.tk
