Greetings citizens

I belong to this tiny 'other' forum that deals with matters of cassettes only. Currently there is a compilation being made of recordings where the cassette player is an integral part of the performance. A bit like Jeffs 'musique concrete' stuff. Having gone to the effort of recording 60 minutes of free form analog synth on the rOn.KnOb cassette recording, my contribution will be to take three copies of this recording and three cassette players, hitch them up to a mixer with an Alesis SR18 drum machine and a Roland VR760 keyboard in Rhodes mode and go create a 'musique concrete' based piece based on the same tune being played in different ways on three cassette players at the same time, with added beats from the Alesis and vibes from the Roland.

So here's what's happening up in the attic tomorrow night...

1). Cassette player 1 plays the original recording with a whack of reverb on it.
2). Cassette player 2 plays the same tune but from a different starting position and through the Korg AX1500 multi effect board.
3. Cassette player 3 is a Tascam Portastudio playing the same track but in reverse.
4. The Alesis SR18 adds a 'Jungle' beat as necessary.
5. I play the Roland for some Rhodes / Wurli chord vibes.
6. The whole lot goes through the little Berri mixer, into a compressor and out into the Akai GX-95 cassette final recorder.

The current script goes...

1). Set all volume pots on the mixer to zero except the drum machine and cassette player 1.
2) Cue cassette player 1 to the start of the mono synth recording.
3). Start the Akai master cassette recorder.
4) Start cassette player 1 and start re-recording the piece.
5). Wait until it develops a bit then start the Alesis drum machine going at a suitable point.
6) Start the other two cassette players going and start playing the mixer varying the various pots, pans, sliders and effects to create an interesting mix.
7). Leave it for a while and get on the Rhodes and play a few vibey chords.
8). Continue mucking about with the mix and dynamics until enough has been recorded.
9). Gradually bring out the various elements until just the drum machine is playing.
10). END IT ON THE ONE (oh yeah).
11). Rewind the resulting recording and listen up.
12). Reset and do it again if it's crap.
13). Drink Bourbon.

rOn.KnOb lives. I'll let you know how it all goes.

Not a bad set up!

I was in the studio last night with my Assistant Engineer, Johnny Walker. He makes everything sound better... or so he says. But, man, he likes to stick around in the morning and cause headaches.
