I GUESS MY COMPUTER IM USEING SONAR PRODUCER TO RECORD VOCALS AND IT DOESNT SOUND GOOD WELL ITS OK BUT LOOKIN @ DIGITAL RECORDER BUT DONT REALLY KNOE HOW TO USE ONE

The thing is, your computer *is* a digital recorder. If you get an outboard hardware recorder it may sound better for several reasons: the preamp and converters may sound better than what you are using now. But those are areas you can fix on your own.

What microphone, preamp, and soundcard are you using now?

Perhaps that is a problem.... The preamp is built into your M-Audio card. Are you sure you have your gain staging set up right. If your next question is "What is gain staging" then the answer is no.

For the record, a hard disk recorder is not going to sound all that different than an M-Audio sound card unless you drop some serious dough. I wouldn't bother with an outboard HD recorder myself.

I guess there are two issues going on here, the first is that it doesn't feel like a studio and the second is that it doesn't sound good.

As far as the first issue, there's nothing like a mixer or a control surface with faders to make you feel like you are in a studio. In your case I would say look at some control surfaces with faders, which will make mixing feel a lot better.

As far as not sounding good, I agree that your current setup will probably sound as good as most any digital recorder you are considering. Not knowing your budget.

What is wrong with your sound, as you hear it?

why would you expect recording in your bedroom on 300 dollars worth of equipment and software you probably didnt pay for feel like a studio. honestly unless you wanna rebuild the room, buy alot of gear, treat the room, etc its not ganna feel like a studio your thinking of probably. As for the sound problem learn to use what you have better, your already using a digital recorder so it wouldnt help to buy another one(an analog recorder would be one that never converts to digital and goes straight to tape or some other analog medium btw) for basic rap you shouldnt need to buy anything than what you have to get a decent sound if you learn the ins and outs of the gear you have and the recording proccess.

Your "M-Audio Mobile Pre" is a Mic pre-amp hence the "Pre" in "Mobile Pre"....

;)
