What to use?

I am a steel drum player and want to create my own backgrounds. My question is should I attempt to make them with a midi controller and software ( I have Sonar8 Producer) or should I use something like a yamaha yq100 sequencer. I can't seem to get out of the blocks with the Sonar as I do not have a midi controller keyboard. on that note is there one midi controller (cheap) that jumps out ahead of the rest. I almost bought an M Audio Midair but thought better to ask first.
I realize this is asking alot but any advice, even sarcasm, would be welcome.

I mean accompany music, something like a karaoke track.
