what to buy

hi,

i am wanting to get into Recording, and i am thinking of going the computer way.

i already have a decent PC, so its a matter of chosing mics, mixer etc.

i will be recording either vocal, drum, bass or guitar tracks for rock music. only one at a time.

1) for the mixer, i was considering the Behringer eurorack 1204 OR the Yamaha MG12/4?

2) Microphones. I was thinking about getting A B1 for the vocals, and an SM57 for bass guitar, then getting 2 overhead mics for the drums.


i only have a limited budget, so i cant shell out for loads of different mics just for the drum kit. All, i need is to be able to record things, to help my skills progress

How much will the mixer set you back? I'm asking this because maybe you can get a four preamp soundcard for around the same price and then you won't have to use a subpar mixer going into a subpar soundcard (probably a soundblaster?) to get it onto your computer. How much can you spend? If you give us the total you have I'm sure someone can come up with a pretty damn good setup for you (we all work on budgets).

You could get a small Berhinger UB series mixer.
(better than "Euro" series)
When you upgrade your pre's/mixer, it can be a handy headphone
amp for a performer's "headphone mix".

1 Marshall MXL603SPR (matched stereo pair) for drums.
1 Whirlwind IMP-2 direct box for bass.

Seeing as how you appear to be in the UK you might be better off buying the B1 from either Digital Village (£64 plus P&P), Red Submarine (£59 plus P&P) or Soundsense (£79 all inclusive).

For the overheads you could always try a matched pair of the Superlux CM-H8Ks for only $164 (about £101, plus freight, import duty and VAT. Shouldn't come to more than about £175 (? ) altogether). I haven't had an opportunity to try them myself, but Dan Richards (AKA Dot) seems to like them.

For the bass get an Audio Technica ATM25 off of ebay (good luck finding anywhere in Britain that sells them). Shouldn't cost more than about £65 plus P&P.

And if you have enough change left you can always buy a second hand SM57 for guitar amps and snare
