Hello. AS a newbie I'm looking for others knowlege on home recording. I have put together a list of things I am going to buy, but I dont know where to start lookin, as in what brands, models ect. Here is a list of what I am buying, please if anyone knows, suggest what brand and model I should purchase. Thanks

4 track w/ punch in/out, DAT, compressor, limiter, noise gate, Effects box, mixer, mics, thanks!

Hey Xtasy03,
I'll try to keep this short!
4 track - Tascam seems to have the best cassette multitracks, Try looking for a 424MKII or MKIII.
DAT - I mix down to my computer so don't know much about DATs
Compressor - RNC (Really Nice Compressor ) from FMR Audio (www.fmraudio.com) Only $175 each from www.mercenary.com.
Mics - probably some Shure SM58s or SM57s.
Limited/Noise gate - probably don't need these now.
Effects box - I'm using an Alesis Nanoverb, cheap reverbs sound ok for the money.
Mixer - the 4 track should take care of this...

Perhaps if you give us more info on what kind of music you plan on doing we an help you more!
Good luck!

Thank you very much for your suggestions, I most definetly will use them. The reason I consider buying a limiter and noise gate is that I will be having very soft vocals(why I need a limiter) and very loud drums, guitars ect. (why I need a noise gate). If you have any more knowlege on those please repley when you can. Also, are those mics good for recording bands? and what is the price? Thanks again for your time and knowlege.

Are you planning on recording everything at once? If you are recording all tracks seperate, I'm not sure that you would need a limiter/compressor. Of course, they are handy to have around, but if you're going very basic (with a tape four track) the trim on the mixer section with an eye on the meter should take care of signal problems (as long as your loud drummer and quiet singer are consistant).

The SM57 & 58 are good all around mics, both can be purchased for around 79 and 99 respectivly. Again, it would help to know your method for recording (are you recording the whole group at once?).

What about your budget, that will certainly have an impact on equipment.

Hello and thanks for you suggestions. I need one more though. What is a good noise supressor to buy for no more than $70 used? I was going to buy a NS-50, but it has been sold.Thanks.

My advice, for what it's worth:

Get the four track, an effects unit (optional), and whatever mic(s) you need, then start recording. Before you start laying down a bunch of money for boxes you may or may not need, first learn what the heck you're doing, ascertain a need for a box, THEN go buy the box. Your purchases should be "need-driven", not "I'm told I need-driven".

I again would like to thank everyone for their advice. I do agree with yer point, and I think I will buy things as I need, not as I'm told. Thanks again. Your opions help me more then ya know.
