Hi,

I'd like to purchase some not too expensive recording software that has the capability to use virtual instrument plugins. I recently bought Adobe Audition to find that it can't handle those. What a waste.

I know there are a bunch out there (cakewalk, cubix, etc) but can someone give me an idea of the pros/cons of these.

I'm primarily a guitar player but would like the ability to play around with the virtual instruments. I'm also looking for a decent midi controller/keyboard for same if you would care to opine on that.

Thanks,
Rut

What kind of budget are you looking at?

Pretty small actually. $100 or so for software and same for controller.

Also look at Cubase VST, loads of VST abilities and of course you can record guitar straight in... re a midi controller... check out ebay for a Tascam US428 (you can control Cubase with it and jack your guitar straight in without having to splash out on a fancy soundcard)... That's the setup I used to have when I started, it was great for the time and for learning the ropes of home recording. Eventually you will want to upgrade if you get serious but that should be fine for starting out.
