what needs to get traded in first my mic or mixer?

my overall goal is to get a better mic and mixer/pre. i have shytty mics and a shytty mixer, according to my readings on this forum. some people may say, if it's doing what i need it to do keep it. i'm not experienced in what to listen for right now, i'm just happy to be able to do some recording on my own. i enjoy being my own boss. i'm blinded by my passoin, which is a good thing. i know that the best music, art, inventions, or whatever was done from passion and not the best gear. i don't mind being really creative and try to find the best sounds these pieces of equipment can render.

i also know that only one person has ever been documented on being able to turn vinegar into wine. having said that, what should get replaced first, mic or mixer?

the only thing that runs through my behringer mixer is my vocal mic. if the answer is mixer, can someone tell me if the peavey and the mackie's are better? if the answer to my question is mic, can someone tell me if the cad95ni, or audio technica 3035 would be better? i hear that the c1 and the marshallv67 are similar, and i also hear that the peavey mixers have superior preamps in thier price range. i'm not referring to the rackmount vmp2, or whatever it's called, i'm talking about the rq10. i mention peavey and the cad 95 because that's what i have seen here so far.
 
I'd recommend the mixer.

The SM58 is a great all purpose mic. (It has very similar characteristics to it's extremely popular brother - the SM57).

From what I recall, the v67 is also a very good condensor mic for the price.

However, the Behringer mixing boards supposedly have poor preamps, have channel bleed through, have poor quality control, and are not very reliable.

The Mackie boards have relatively great preamps for the price, are of good quality, and have good product support.



To me it's a no brainer.
 
I agree. The mics you have are fine. If you had said you had Radio Shack mics or you stole one from your nephew's Fisher Price toy, then yeah get new mics. But you've got fine mics to start with. Get a better quality board and you will be moving in the right direction.

thanks for the advice. i ended up getting an art tube mp preamp. it's funny because i traded that thing in for the behringer now i'm right back with it. it's just temporary right now, i'll probably get a mackie real soon. thanks again.
 
...also consider this: that SM58 is essentially the same as the SM57 with the windscreen unscrewed. So there you have a decent vocal mic with the windscreen, and a decent guitar mic without it.

what's a windscreen? can i put one in the 58 myself to match the 57?
 
The windscreen is already on the 58. It's the oval top, which can be unscrewed. The windscreen is used to help reduce breath sounds, sibilance (when the "s" in words become overemphasized) and pops when saying words beginning with "p". Because of the windscreen, the 58 is touted as a vocal mic. The 57 doesn't come with a windscreen because it's primarily used as an instrument mic.

I must concur.

Ditch the board and get a new one.

I just picked up a little Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro. Nice pres and low noise. $349 new.

What you have is good to learn how to route signals and such, but to get to the next level... you need to step up just a little.

My 2 cents.

BTW, just did a live session last week at a jazz club using a stereo pair of MC012's with LOMO heads, an RNC compressor, the Mackie, and a ZOOM hard disk recorder. The recording is so quiet that even during dynamic dips in the music, I can hear people talking (loud, of course) at the bar some 40 feet away from the stage. Clearly enough to know who is speaking. You'd never hear that level of detail if it was recorded through a noisy board.

It was really nice to be able to pack everything up walk out with everything in ONE trip! :D :D :D

you were both very helpful. i would have never known that oval piece was a windscreen. i'm considering the mackie to be one of my next purchases.
