yorkvilles, sounds great. for all of you recorders not using monitors, get some today. it took me 2 years before I saw the light and now I hear the sounds.

I've got Roland, several types. That's the best, I think, but most people think that of their 'own' brand, I guess.

Crackhead speakers

DUDE

I have a pair of speakers called allegro by zenith that I will put up against any monitor on the planet. these speakers have the flatest response i have seen. If i get a mix to sound good on these it sounds good everywhere else. I call them crackhead speakers because myold neighbor(before I moved ) was a drug dealer and she got them from one of her customers for get this 10.00 dollars and gave them to me. I get perfect lows and highs not colored or any thing. they are the perfect monitor.

the crackhead brand has served me as well. I have a crackhead ricky 4001 bass. It's important that the crackhead doesnt know where you live though, they may come back to claim it at night while you are asleep.

NS10's are my checking point. Ill mix with Genelecs first, get a nice mix going.once i think ive finished it, illplay through the NS10's and see how it sounds. like CyanJaguar said, if it sounds good on NS10's, it'l work anywhere.

Ive used NS10's all my life and I know em well. get a pair!!!!

ns10's

I have had the pleasure of working with ns10's in a friends studio and i have to admit they sounded like crap, the deadest speaker i have ever heard. No bass what so ever. The highs did not sparkle nor did the mids. Thats when it hit me that it wasn't the speaker it was the band (who shall remain nameless) that sounded like that and the speakers were giving and actual picture of what it was like to record that day. I'm allready preparing to get a pair

Good luck getting those ns10s. I can usually find anything but its like they fell off the earth. Nobody has them in stock.

Tannoy SBM's

Tannoy SBM's -- flattest response --- Mid --- Highs --- Lows ---
all clear --- mixes, superb ---- cost $99 --- True Feel, no additives

dont doubt it till you have heard for youself

Was waiting for YSM-1p...but

.....I was walking thru the local (pricey) music store and they had a pair of the new Alesis Monitor One MK2 for $179 (pair). I thought/think it was a mis-priced deal...or a great deal depending on who you are...so I grabbed them right away. Funny, both Bruce and Gidge (and a whole lot of others) had me waiting for the YSM-1 powered. Hope I did a good thing spending my kid's inheritance $$...(post consumer guilt).

Let me know what you think......

I dont think Bruce likes Alesis M1's! I have a few M1's but i haven't got any mk2's. anyone tell me if they're good?

the m1's are good to check stuff on, but there are better nearfields out there.i personally think they sound pretty nice though. that seems a good price you got there! allthough i live in the uk so things are a bit more expensive in most cases. nice deal:-) let us know how you're getting on with your monitors!

I'm having good luck with the alesis m1, I sold my tannoy proto-js (good riddence). not only do they sound fine , they translate well to other speakers. the tannoys sounded so dead that I was overcompensating the highs and lows.

Its too late to change my vote, but I reccomend that you also try on other speakers to hear what joe schlubb is going to hear the music on.

Hafler TRM 8

Am I the only one who uses this studio monitor. I demo's it against the hr 824's and I thought it blew them away. I'd be interested in hearing what other people think of this speaker. If you haven't heard it, check it out.

haven't tried the Haflers but i have the mackie's. they're gorgeous. i might try those haflers to see howthey compare.

LongWaveS..thanks..

Thanks for your positive feedback....even though I'm not poor by most standards...I feel guilty spending money on myself... especially for a pair of monitors that I know most "pros" wouldn't consider. It was the price that did it for me...these are going for $250 US pair on the internet (MF, Sweetwater, etc.) so I couldn't pass up the "sticking it to the man" $179 price tag. This store has ripped me off in the past so I don't feel bad about it.

Just for a test, I hooked these up last night to a Crown amp (150w/side) and my alesis qs8.1 (just bought that last week....on the cheap). Man, it sounds awesome. Very surprised. Now I just have to learn to mix on them.

and it has the quality of the 824's? im trying to get a good variety of monitors to go in our listening room.that seems a good buy!

RCA 5" full range, NO TWEETERS. These little speakers are the most honest speakers I've ever heard.

I have to think its because there are no tweeters.

Music is full range, speakers should be to!

I rest my case.

I use old JBL4406 monitors, and i really like them, but then i havent heard to many other monitors. Just some small genelecs 1029(?) and spirit absolute 2 (i think). I liked the JBLs a lot more. they have better detail i think, but they lack in the bottom end...But i usually cure that by listening to my mixes on bigger "hifi" speakers

JBL LSR25P

Great little boxes. Love 'em. Love 'em. Love 'em.

Bi-amped is the way to go for small home project studio.

Why use a monitor system that requires a sub to become a full range system.

If you dont get the sub all of the mixes will have a heavy bottom end to make up for it.

Not so....

A sub is supposed to be calibrated only to extend the low end response of the system, not to "boost" it unnaturally. In other words, the low-end should sound deeper and more clearly defined, without being louder or obtrusive.

So when properly calibrated with respect to the other monitors, a sub can be excellent for monitoring purposes.

Of course, there's still a learning curve in translating mixes on such a system, just like any other monitoring system has.
