I'm with c7sus: Event Trias. Too damned bad they discontinued them, because they were one hell of a deal while they lasted...

LOL another first! I agree with barefoot on something!
The Quested are awsome monitors. My 2 fav monitors to mix on are Quested 3208 and JBL LSR

I come out of a Darla into a Denon receiver through Klipsch 3.5's. Used to use Bose 301's but too much of their own "warmth".

sjoko,

Cool, common ground. :)

Yeah, Quested uses the brute force method of designing monitors. They buy the most expensive drivers, split them up with top notch crossovers and dedicated amps, and run each driver in a narrow bandwidth to increase power handling and somewhat control dispersion. I wouldn't necessarily call it an elegant approach, but it's very effective. Probably the nicest commercial (apposed to custom) designs I've heard.

I'm not such a fan of the LSR's though. They are definitely a big step forward for JBL, and better than average. Looks like they finally hired some fresh blood. Still those prehistoric ancestors are creeping too close under the surface for my liking. There might have been a day when JBL had something special to speak of, but certainly not since I've been into this stuff. Maybe the next time Lansing Michigan gets hit with a major snow storm, and a bunch of those old time engineers keel over while shoveling the driveway, JBL will fully step into the present decade.

LOL I know JBL designed the LSR's from scratch completely, without the involvement of any "old" blood.
Last year we spend a full week testing just about every midfield on the market (with an artist who could afford to take his time ... deciding what to use for midfields for a week at 1600 a day :).
Make a long story short - last 3 left were Quested, KRK, JBL. KRK dropped - split decissions (2 engineers, producer, artist) between Quested and JBL. Artist made the final decision, so it was JBL.
I have just installed 6 LSR's in the new control room, as for surround they win hands down over Quested. If I had the choice to have a seperate stereo set-up, I'd go for the those (have to make another hit record first, working on it)

the pros use three sets so i use three

my first set is tannoy, for doing my mastering chores. second is a set of linium lx5 speakers. third i go through a boombox with an aux in ,sony something.

if the tannoys sound good i will tweek on the lx5 set which is a good honest pair of monitors. if you want to hear what your mix will sound like on a boombox why not use the boombox it will tell you. the homerecording mag had an artical that advised that and its good advice. after it sounds good on boombox it will sound good on the tannoys and great on the lx5 speakers.

Yamaha NS 10's

It should sound anywhere if it sounds good on them, you know why???

Cause they are a very MID-range speaker. Little bottom end and very mid focused. MIDS - right where the most sensitive frequencies of human perception are, right where the music is! Sure, they have far from a flat response, So use another set of moniters to reference. My best mixes have come from NS 10's.

And thats why many pro studios have them. Mix with NS10, reference with something better ;)

i voted other---i have a pair of m-1 s (alesis) and a pair of ns-10s......but my mains are a set of genelecs....s30-c-------not a lot of low end in them...and i just got them...so i will be spending a week just getting used to them...theve got built in eq too...very cool

Other

Alesis .7s. I like um, but most stuff I mix doesn't need earth-shaking bass, either.

I use the Event PS6 monitors. Everything translates well. I was surprised at how good they were when i got them. I thought I would at least have to get the PS8's. But these are great. I think I'm gonna have them for a long time.

I have a pair of Alesis monitor one’s and a pair of JBL 4208’s. I don’t riley like the monitor ones munch because they have a mid range bust in them. I find my ears get fatigued real fast with them. My mixes also don’t sound as bright when I take them somewhere else because I end up killing all my mids.

My JBL 4208’s I absolutely love. They have a very flat frequency response. I never have to second-guess my self with them.

I got my PS-8's a few weeks ago, and they sure are LOUD! I'm still listening to different music, trying to get a feel for them. I can really hear EVERYTHING now - what a difference. I play the new Steely Dan, and every instrument stands out in the mix. Wish I could do that.

I got Derek and the Dominoes (Layla and other.....) CD the other day at the library, and I played that through the Events....... what crap! Sounded like a bunch of stoned guys jammin' real loud......... well, that's probably what it was, but the mix was terrible, too many rhythm guitars bumping into each other. I never really heard that before, so I guess that's a plus for the Events.

Ditto Andy.

I also have the Monitor Ones. Adequate speakers at best. They seem to have extra "punch" that accentuates a mix. Thus, the final mix doesn't sound as good on other systems. Kinda cool for a stereo, but bad for monitors.

Electrovoice MS-802 monitors

I bought them like a dozen years ago. I have been using them for my home entertainment system lately, but since I'm getting back into recording again, they'll be serving double duty.

Of course, I have a couple of Roland MA 8 monitors for lugging around and idea sketching. I'm thinking of using the Rolands on my PC DAW and the EV's on my HD recorder.

I'm still hashing out things like that so don't hold me to anything.

;)

ev 802 monitors.

funny story ; i saw one in a pawn shop and almost bought a pair for only 80 bucks , but some hosehead sold the second one.

thanks to this thread...

I'm thinking that using my 802's for watching TV is a total waste. I'm going to move these back into the studio and get a couple of consumer grade speakers for the living room.

:D

Other speakers

Well, I use my usual HiFi speakers (Quartz MB), don't have enough money for special monitor speakers

i found some cheap monitors

i was at musicians friend this weekend in kansas city and they sold me a pair of alesis monitor ones. for 160 bucks (box blems but the cornerguards falling of is no big deal.

they also had soundcraft spirit monitors for 140bucks they sounded ok but ive never heard of them so i got the alesis pair

if you look hard enough you will find a deal, just keep your ear to the ground.
