I see all these big mic stands for stage performances that are for tall vocals. What about just a really short one for miking amps? Is a low profile one use dfor that?

Whatever will reach should do fine as long as it's not too cheap or light. One with a boom is gonna give you the most flexability as far as positioning.

Yes. Most stands don't come with clips. What kind of mic are you using?

Any mic that is at least slightly worth something will include its own mic clip.
