What mic am I lacking?

Great choice with the U87. Get the anniversary edition. It will blow your mind.
And I would choose the SM81 over the KSMs.

MD 421 is a must have mic. With those pres anything you get, you're gonna get the best out of. IF, and I'm only saying it as an IF, you decide to get a Neumann...(yeah go ahead!!!!) Get a U87. Through a Great River this is THE SOUND. Sure, theres LOTS of other "The Sounds" but that one would be so satisfying, huge, dimensional, and beautiful, it'll take a couple of years at the least to want for anything else. If you opt for a TLM Neumann, get the TLM193 as a bargain mic or a TLM127. Neither is as 'spitty' sounding as the 103 and both sound better on many other sources. None are U87's.

After rereading your list it occured to me that you have half of a great set of overheads. Get another 4033 and never look back. These are wonderful drumkit overheads. I also would choose the SM81 over the KSM137's. They're a bit more aggressive and thats kinda what you want for rock....eh. A GREAT acoustic guitar mic for a dense thick mix.

A 58 in case one of the screamers absolutely NEEDS to hold the mic. I'd also get at least 1 more 57. Saving up for a U87 would be key, though, because that's one of the mics musicians know about and if they don't see it, they may not take you seriously.

This is besides the fact that they sound great. Especially through GreatRiver,Chandler,API, ya know, the regular stuff.

Yo Myriad! First, I disagree with you regarding Avalon, but I agree the U5/AD2022 wouldn't be my first choice for heavy rock (except as a bass DI). For a string quartet, it might be.
That being said, you started talking about how to spend $320, and these guys are trying to sell you a U87! If you find one for $320, let me know. Looking at your cabinet, frankly it doesn't suck. You have chosen respected mics that are very good at their price point. Now I could recommend a ton of expensive mics that would expand your cabinet's capabilities. but so what? That's not what you asked for. Here's the best stuff I can think of-

Oktava MK319- Any female vocalists you have will kiss you for it
Oktava MC012 matched pair from The Sound Room- much better rock overheads than the NT5's, IMHO. weirdly- for some folks they are pretty good vocal mics, but probably not for hard rock.
Sennheiser MD421- what the SM57 wishes it was
AKG C2000B- no shit- stick this little bugger in front of a cab and it will surprise the hell out of you. A pair make great overheads, at least as good as the MC012's, and they work very well on some vocalists, as long as they aren't big time screamers. One of the most underated cheap condensers.

Any of those mics fits in your budget or is damned close, and will do something no mic you currently have will do. Just a note on the MC012's- I'm talking about the Russian ones. The Chinese ones are OK mics, but they are almost the same as your NT5's. And I'm dead serious about the C2000B being a kickass cab mic. Good luck-Richie

Seems like you already have quite a few well respected mics. But I'm surprised you don't have more stereo pairs. Or 10x SM57 / SM58's, or a TLM 103. Maybe not the best mics, but it seems like everyone else has them. But what do I know, I'm just a trombone player.

A second 4033?

A second Fathead II?

How about a nice RE-20?

MD-421 is nice on snare, but so is the Beyer M201.

Are you sure you don't need more than one new mic?:p

Great River

I'm thinking I'm going to go with the MD421. Then I'm going to pick up either some SM81's or KSM137's. Then I'm going for the U87, I think.

and then there's this....
"That being said, you started talking about how to spend $320, and these guys are trying to sell you a U87!"

Uhhh....Personally, I was only encouraging the man to go for what hes eventually going to do anyway. And heres the reason....(yeah some folks have reasons for the shit they say)...

He's got a lot of nice mics already...enough to do whatever he needs to do recording -wise....Is this okay with you? Great pres, a little cash....save it up and get the U87.

BUT if you MUST spend $320.....buy a Heil PR40. It will do everything a MD421, EV RE20, SM7B,and a lot of cheap condensers will do. One of THE best vocal mics for ANY style I have ever used. Including screamers.
