What makes a good song?

Just the factors that make a good song. I think simplicity is important. I support the idea of prog rock in theory, moving beyond the simple "rock-by the numbers" structure of a rock-pop song. But the majority of all the prog rock things I've checked out are terrible and not fun to listen to. Who the hell wants to listen to dream theater? Sorry if any of you do, but they seem like a bunch of nerds to me.
