What is "trim" and how do I use it?

I'm using a mixing board, not for mixing but just for plugging in my microphone and then running it to my computer for multitrack mixing.

I think I know what the various knobs are, level etc., but I'm not sure what trim is for. How should I set this when recording?

Thanks for your help.

The mixers I've owned always referred to this knob as the "gain" knob. It controls the input gain the mixer is applying to the signal running into that channel.

Twist it a bit and see what happens - it should strengthen or lessen the 'volume' of the input signal depending on which way you turn it.

it's just an adkustment for the first stage of the pre... try doing a search on gain staging... the idea is basiclly to get the most out of each stage withput overdriving the next... make sense???
