what is this sleeve that covers where the bare wires meet? what is it called and can i buy it? i usually get my cable stuff from full compass so if any of you know a model number or what it is called i would like to know. thanks! also, is it some sort of heat wrap that creates tension so it doesn't let the wires tear away?

Shrink tube is what you want.

Why not solder your send and receive cables right at the TRS insert plug?

Just strip the cable a little longer there and put the shrink over that joint.

You also need a heat gun. I've tried hair dryers and they don't work very well.

Yeah, hair dryers won't cut it. You can rent a heat gun for about $10-12/day at a rental yard.

Home Depot sells dual temp 700/1500W heat guns for $40.

They are often sold as paint strippers rather than heat shrink tubing heaters, but they are essentially the same thing and work very well for heat shrink tubing.

While making a bumper to bumper wiring harness for my crewcab pickup two weeks ago, I had about 150 solder joints to cover with tubing and heat. Works absolutely fine.
