what IS the big deal about protools?

the reason that tools became popular years ago was as an example i knew quite a few big studio owners who were pretty computer illiterate that i met at AES shows. so it provided a out of the box solution. without the studio owner having to know a lot about computers. but from reading other forums like gearslutz and others it would seem some pretty senior engineer types question the sound quality, mix buss and various other issues .
in fact there are some pretty heated discussions on various forums about various issues.
all these years later there are lots of other affordable options to get songs down.

honestly, a lot of these programs are VERY similar...what has pro tools done that has made it the industry standard?

Nothing

Pro Tools with the Digi002R runs about $1200.00
Nuendo runs around $1250.00 (no hardware)

Pro Tools is a very solid program that offers free upgrades to anyone who owns thier Hardware. I've been using Pro Tools for a while now and I've never said to myself, I wish had....... because either Pro Tools can do it or a plug-in can do it within a reasonable Price.

it was first, that has a lot to do with it.

but in it's defense, i have yet to see another program where audio editing is as flexible. (not that the others aren’t very good, just that protools is a little more intuitive in that area)

it totally lacks in any department having to do with midi (compared to the competition)
but i never use midi, nothing aganst it, it just dosen't come up.

Aboslutely nothing -- it's the McDonald's of the recording world - much like NS-10s used to be....

i think we should stop telling noobs to use the search function. its working against us.

It's true. They keep asking the same questions anyways......

I have some expriences working in a Nuendo and in PT environment!

Both are pretty cool, and both have their downsides!

PT LE is crap, i am not even discussing them. TDM are a dream when mixing. Like the boys said, some plug-ins are really great, editing is also very intuitive and easy, quick!
The midi work is a joke. It sads me that the AVID/Digidesign men, did not step in to do a Cubase-like midi environment. I hear Logic is great too!

Nuendo is very nice. I think in general the sistems are very similar. Though Nuendo is cheaper! More flexible, The software not being a part of the hardware.

A very bad thing i had discovered with Nuendo is that it took 3 generation and 10 years or so, that Mr. Steinberg decided that would be a wise choice if Nuendo would be able to work with external FX connections!
SOmething PT men, started with!

I would not know about hte business politics of AVID, because i live in Europe and here we didn't get that influence.!
I think we slowly begin to recognize the PT sistems over the years when US engineers already mastered and TDm was introduced to various studios.
some 5 or so years ago PT became very popular in Europe.
I was talking to the dealer who said, that he started the business 15 years ago, as a second dealer in Europe!
First was a guy in France/Paris, dealing PT sistems from his apartment...

You are right, but, that's why I bought sampletank, all the instruments I could want.

I believe Manning was banned for his incessant spamming of these boards. It may well be that he was discovered to have ties to pgmusic, but I don't know for sure. He has been banned twice from here now, and this one looks permanent.

Manning can be seen spamming the gearslutz boards now. He has toned down his act a but and is acting all innocent, but he is still be taken to task from time to time.

My turn to keep this thread alive:

I was curious exactly why for about, 2 seconds. It's been a nice environment here without having to daily bump into postings with his "favorite software". While he most certainly had a ton of helpful moments here helping others, the "innocent" routine used when he was called on the PG stuff got old REALLY fast. I've seen the same stuff on the gearslutz boards too, with the addition of close backup for the spam from a select few other member(s).

Put that pot stirring stick down....or whatever it is your sticking in the pot. :D ha.
