What is the best OS for Recording?

Is Windows XP any good or any different that Windows 2000 when it comes to recording?

some would argue for win2k, however, xp is what MS is pushing now. i'm using ME and will switch to xp when i have xp drivers for all my hardware. however, i really can't say for sure which is better right now, if you're planning to load an OS today.

WDM driver support is key

It's pretty much either Win2k or WinXp in terms of adequate latency. WDM driver support for the hardware that you already own will tell you if you'll get a benefit from upgrading the OS.

this is true to a point, however, i have been able to get ultra low latency with WDM and ASIO on WINME....the problem for me is no one is developing WDM for ME, and you have to wonder how long 2k is going to be supported.

I'm using XP Pro. Be prepared if you are switching up though. Check out your hardware and such, make sure the manufacturers have support (they should by now!) Also, some programs evidently don't work in XP (like Pro Tools Free). I am using Acid 3, Fruity Loops, CW PA9, N-track, and Sound Forge 5 with XP and everything is great. My latency is as low as I have been able to get it, and my system is as stable as any mac in existence, considering I have had no system crashes, no program crashes, etc. The only problem I've ever really had was a few weeks ago when I tried to install my old copy of Nero 5.5 and after the reboot my cdrom was no longer recognized. Nero's install had screwed up some critical info in my reg and I ended up doing a full restore from my backup. That was ugly.

To sum up: I love XP. I have recorded some of the best work I have ever done on my XP machine. I hate MS, those bastard killed BeOS, but I really do love XP.

My input comes from a friend who has a degree in computer science and is a designer at Nintendo for the audio dept. He also has a 32 track studio, ghosts and ADATs, U87's and the whole lot. We were talking one day about my DAW setup, first edition WIn98... He said to track down a Win95 Beta version, he said it was more stable than anyother version of MS OS. This is prior to XP, but its worth investigating if its true...

I would have to dissagree. I ran several Win95 betas prior to the Win95 launch (all the way up to release canidate (RC2)
or something like that) and the final release was WAY more stable, not to mention alot faster. The betas were all bloated and slow because of all the additional code in them to troubleshoot bugs, etc. I was a Computer Engineering major myself in college.

Win95 would not even run on most of today's machines! There is no support for USB, DirectX or even WDM drivers. Most peripherals you buy today don't even come with Win95 drivers.

To sum up: I love XP.

Just make sure you have a damn good firewall...

XP acts as a SERVER - disseminating info about you into the net.

I blocked it with my firewall...IMHO MS stepped over the line by writing in that functionality.

It is a great OS for audio however which is why I run it. Stable and fast...

so far XPpro is the best for me. XPhome blue screened on me a few times, but i haven't had any problems with XPpro. its fast stable and all my programs work, not to mention i have a latency of 2ms under Xppro with my delta 1010. 2000 is stable also but it is slower and even with tweaks its not as fast as Xp with out tweaks.
