Kjærhus audio is good.

Kvr audio has some stuff.

Dirtbag is cool, so is melowsound, and a few others.

I know you said Instruments but the SIR reverb plug in is the absolute b*llocks, I can't believe it's free.

in terms of instruments the mysterion is worth a look, the band portishead used it quite a bit, apparently!

there's a ton of freebies to try out. i have a ton of them myself. you never know what might work for a certain occasion. might as well hord all the freebies you can get.

Don't leave out Ambience (reverb). GVST gives free VSTs also.

vst's (virtual studio technology) are effect plugins and vsti's (virtual studio technology instrument) are instrument plugins. steinberg created the technology. other formats of plugins are dxi (cakewalk) and rtas (pro tools).
