What is talent?

I think talent is the ability connect with your audience viscerally, regardless of the medium. How you gain that ability is besides the point.

+1

I think that pretty much nailed it from my perspective.

Let's hope the horse wasn't "broken" so the jockey could ride it.
There will be occasions when a horse can run, jump, play, procreate &, in fact, live it's life without being subjugated doing great things.
There are those horses that form a partnership with the rider to do great things for the rider's benefit.
See, I've P.C.'d the good analogy to pieces.
Nevertheless: I like the analogy too.
I bumped into E.C. coming out of the loo in a small rock venue in Sydney - Nick Lowe was doing a one man gig. E.C. was obv. there as part of a plan. He walked out of the loo & into me. My response: "Praise the lord - er that's you!" He walked on, stepped up on stage & did a beautiful duet of Baby It's You with Nick.
I've seen him 1/2 doz times & haven't been disappointed yet & he hasn't been trumped as I've not met anybody famous other than him - & well, bumping into someone at a crowded Kardomah Kafe is almost a given.
Frankie - after some internal debate I followed that link yesterday - I was going to comment in much the same way as you but decided it would only gratify the poster with more visitor click on their page.
I like the African runner idea too but the gift may well be contained in the genetic predispostion to do so based on breeding, evolution and luck (if it can be seen as that given the difficult circumstances) which is compounded by nurture and necessity all of which coalesce within the crucible of desire to break out of the confines of that existence (the boxing analogy of the 30's, the soccer/popstar/reality show analogy of now).
