I have been looking for a new interface. I have seen a few that say that they have a dsp routing/mixer involved in them, like the saffire pro 40. What is this exactly? I understand what dsp effects are, but I'm alittle lost on the whole dsp routing/mixer thing.

It's a monitor mixer in the digital domain that allows you to mix your inputs with your existing tracks for monitoring during tracking.

More specifically, it refers to a chip optimized for digital signal processing. Most general purpose CPUs can do the same operations nowadays, as evidenced by DAW software. DSPs tend to be cheaper to embed in standalone devices.

In short, it's one way or another of controlling what inputs go where (choose a channel number to be seen by the actual recording software, or duplicate input to an output etc.) and what appears on the interface outputs (monitor mix from software, headphone output, talkback mic etc...)

The kind of thing you're talking about is usually done in the interface, and is controlled via a piece of software run from your recording machine.

Hope that makes it slightly clearer?

Alright, I think I got it. I was wondering, I think I may go with the Focusrite saffire pro 40 interface, that's where I seen that. I wanna know what it is capable of.
