OK, I have a vague idea what compression does - something like evening out short term amplitude variation on a track - but could someone please explain in extreme detail exactly what a compressor does?

What would be particularly helpfull is if this explaination could include description of the function attack and release. Thanks in advance.

there's a search function...look in the upper right corner NOW!
see?
Type in compression... hit enter...

there you go!

I did a search on compression and came up with this. I knew it was there because I have seen it before. The reason I point this out is that it only took me a moment to find it. It was on the second page of listings. Patience is a virtue.

Anyway, here is the link. Not only will you find this very useful, but you will also be glad to know that it was written by one of our own here. The infamous Ed Rei (sonousman)

Also the link that pg posted is also very good (also written be one of us). You will also note that there is a link to the same article that I am directing you to in the artical that pg is linkg you to.

Happy reading adn learning

seriously dude, there have been really excellent posts here 'bout compression... ok, you had to sort the list out for useful info. and i didn't have one post in mind cuz there are so many. Don't you think it's a little too easy just posting " what's compression"?

I'll make a post for sonusman: " hey ED, master my mix" and let him do all the work... get the comparison?

We all are willing to help i guess, but your question has been answered here previously. (100% sure it is!)
