Nady TCM 1050 / Studio Projects T3

I posted this on 7/21:

George, I'll be receiving a 1050 in a week or so and I'll be comparing it w/ the Studio Projects T3. I'll post when I'm finished w/ my evaluations.

Well, turns out it's not happening. Here's the email from the person who was going to loan the 1050 to me:

About the Nady TCM 1050 - bad news, for me, I'm afraid. ...here's the story: I tried to order one when they were first out (about 5 months ago),and was told there was a waiting list. I finally got mine (about 3 and 1/2 months ago) and couldn't get any signal out of it at all. I thought it was defective, and sent it back. AMS said they had 2 more and would send me a new one immediately (this is about the time you let me try the C1). Turns out, their computer was messed up, and they didn't have any, so I got put on
the waiting list again. The new one came this Thursday. Same thing - no
signal. I called Nady because I figured it must be me, but they said I
was doing everything fine, so I called AMS to return it AGAIN! The tech
support at AMS said that on the last one, all they did was switch the box
from 220 to 110v and it worked perfectly! I tried it on the new one, and
sure enough, it worked (I felt like a doofus, but at least the mic worked
- I still don't know why Nady would send it pre-set to 220 if the normal
house outlet is 110). Now that I had a signal, I went to set the mic up,
and the shockmount doesn't fit properly! So I had to send it back again
anyway!! All of this has left a bad taste in my mouth, so I just had
them credit my card and NOT send a new one. As far as sound goes, the Nady sounded pretty cool. It was warm and clear. Yet, I will say it had a somewhat strange quality to it, and I doubt you would like it. SO that's the long story of why I don;t have one to send you, but I'm sure there will be
other stuff to try down the line. Again, thanks for letting me try the
C1.

Sorry folks. Though, it doesn't paint the 1050 in the best of light.

If anyone has a 1050 and can load it to me for a few days, I'll compare it to the Studio Projects T3. I'll have more on the T3 soon.

Hey Shakes or anyone that may know,
I was doing a search around here on the ADK 51TC after someone recommended looking into. Getting good props. Anyways, you said about seeing one for about $400 or so. Can you give me some direction on where you got that price. I've seen them at $600 but would be a fool not to try to save $200.

antofants, thank you for digging up this very old thread.... I missed it. I'm going to the first page and read it from the start now. Thanks.

OH GOD! I"M SORRY!!

I looked at the last reply date of 8/6 before my reply and didn't realize that it was from 2001. SO VERY SORRY!! My question still stands, however, and I was actually more interested in the 51TL version for its multi patterns. Maybe I should post this in a new thread. SORRY ONCE AGAIN ALL! - David

antofants, you didn't do anything wrong... so you don't have to be sorry.

It's interesting how this thread started off talking about Rode mic's and etc... then it turned into a Studio Projects advertisement... then it turned into a Chinese flame... and then it turned into flaming c7sus.. and then Alan walks away clean, Hummmm.

Isn't it embarassing when newbies dig up old threads about when you were a newbie asking the same questions.

Lot of old names in this thread I haven't seen for awhile.

I think it's neat and interesting how some of us change our minds or view over time and how some never learn or change.

Boy, this is a timeless thread. Studio Projects C1, Chinese vs. American made, best for under $500............Even though this thread is 2 yrs old, it could have been made yesterday and you would never know, hehe!

I agree AT mics are turning heads. The 4040 is up for a TEC award.

I ve seen on the net alot of terrific reviews on the studio projects c-1 and It seems to be only 250.00 but they are not avilible at mars or musicians friend yet.

I must say I am curious ,they say It sounds the same as a neumann u87.

also the behringer b2 mic has the same insides as a rode nt2 for only 250.00

I only mention that because the rode nt2 Is also a cannidate at 450.00

the rode ntk is a tube version of the nt2 for 499.00 Just under the wire and its tubed.

But my question is whose voice is it for. some mics are better for the highvoices and some are better for the low ones.

Oh man. Forget about the U87. It is a $2000 mic. There is no possible way that a $250 mic sounds like the U87. Take the C1 for what it is. It is a good cost effective mic. That is all.

On my voice, a Beyer M88TG (cost $150 used), sounds better than
a Neumann U87ai (both mics run through an Avalon 737 BTW).
Don't care for the bright "top".

I know of a bunch of microphones under $250 that'll give a U87 a hard time on many voices...

Chris

Don't mean to exhaust anyones patience, but I figured since I revitalized this cool thread, I have some right to do so;) . (and on a side issue, my smilies don't seem to be working...hmm) Is anyone familiar enough with the ADK TL mic that may be able to give me some extra input on that mic? Likes/dislikes, etc.
You all are great- David

I knew an Audio Engineer that used to live here that was in love with ADK. Infact he bought one that cost like $8000. He used them on almost everything.

However i didnt care much for the sound. It was really thin and bright to my ears. I can possible post a recording of stuff he used it on.

The rest of the recording also is might be considered a joke considering he had like a $300 thousand dollar studio and his recordings sound horrible, at least in my opinion.

if your interested in hearing it, let me know and i will try to post it up.

Chris, although we all appreciate your insights on these matters, sometimes I think you get a little carried away with this stuff. :D Why don't you stick to comparisons based on real, actual experience? It would be much more valuable. And when it is based on real experience, why not share some details?; comparison methodology, time, place, etc. It makes your statements much more credible. Sometimes I think you just regurgitate stuff you've heard engineers say on other boards. And you don't have to. Thanks a bunch!

Yea, I agree. Here's a perfect example:
