What is a tube?

I think you should read this: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427321.000-clever-fools-why-a-high-iq-doesnt-mean-youre-smart.html

an interesting article no doubt... and while i agree for the most part it still smacks of some kinda sour grapes for those that wanted to be smarter than they are... or perhaps over achievers vs underachievers... .

well folks, my wife is a psychologist and is required to administer the IQ test among many other tests. When she was getting her PhD I was the lucky guy elected to take ALL of these tests a bunch of times. Matter of fact the IQ test was given to me 8 times by my wife, then twice by a freind of hers who was in the same graduating class, then once by the department chairman to mitigate the descrepancies. By MsHilarious's information, I am a qualified accountant, an engineer and a scientist, depending upon which score I decided to use. The variation was between xxx and yyy... the high score being the last and the one done by the Psych department chairman.

So! am I smarter than everybody? haha... Nope. The fact is, I got better at taking the test, and my wife got better at administering the test. There is subjectivity involved throughout. Accurate time keeping plays a role. If you've taken certain courses at a college level, you will do much better. If you have a knack for spacial stuff... like puzzels, you can score points and make up for... let's say a lack of math skills. Let's face it... some days you're all smarter than you were on another given day. Not really, but you may be more alert... or maybe you ate bacon, which we all know makes a person's brain grow:rolleyes:... it was then that I had the tube implanted so I would sound warmer whilst reciting math-based poetry... but alas... what exactly IS a tube anyway?

Since the folks here know way more than I do on the subject of recording, and I come here to learn about recording, who cares if I can decipher DNA using a slide rule?

I think Ms Hilarious point may have been that the IQ test provides a relative measure of intelligence from which we can glean some idea of capability. She felt underwhelmed by her present capability as an audio engineer, even tho she knows tons of other "stuff".:D

Then again, maybe not:confused:

OK, now you can explain how that article, maybe specifically this quote:

Quote:
The problem with IQ tests is that while they are effective at assessing our deliberative skills, which involve reason and the use of working memory, they are unable to assess our inclination to use them when the situation demands.
conflicts with my statement:

Quote:
I stated about as much in my early post on the topic, which is electrical engineering, not life skills.

I told you, that's all I have to say.

Well the conversation went something like this:

Somebody: gee, msh u r smrt!

me: not really, i barely know the basics.

somebody else: yeah, but you're still really smart!

me: thx, but sriusly, i don't have the higher math skills to be an EE.

yet somebody else: IQ don't mean nuthin'

me: actually, it has a lot to do with math aptitude.

people in general: yeah, but it doesn't mean you'll be successful (or 100 other things I never argued).

me: sigh.

The point that is lost here is that "audio engineering", such as the term is used, doesn't mean much, at least since the days when real audio engineers wore lab coats . . .

I think, madam, you'll find that the point which has been lost here, is the point of this thread. The kid asked what tubes are.

Kind regards

Time for a little of the ultra violence
I'm singing in the rain -tube- just singing in the rain -tube- ..................

A tube by any other name would still sound as sweet as a tube.

...but still not smart enough to get sucked into this ridiculous argument. :p

hey... i didnt say that... i've been misquoted... go ahead check snopes....

is this about fee waybill????

i think most things are connected in one way or another to Fee. He is the Kevin Bacon of obscure pop wonders.

Happy New Year everyone! ...

What do I need?

Hey music recording gurus!!
I am a musician that plays several instruments and would like to start recording my stuff. But I don't know what I need to start. The only piece of equipment I have that is somewhat new is my computer. It does have a 1394 port (firewire) in it, and I have a guitar processor and piano with midi. I also have Cubase studio case 1 but appearently it wont run with Vista. So who out there can help me with this?
