What is a good Guitar Effects unit?

Yeah but the GNX3 if I remember correctly is about double the price of the 2. It adds a 6 minute digital recorder and a drum machine, so it seems that it's designed more as a poor mans work station for guitar players rather than as a strict effects processor. Not something I'd necessarily use, seeing as how I have recording equipment already. Probably useful for a guitarist on the road being able to quickly put down ideas for later.

Then POD is ok for recording but sucks for runnin through a PA.
Go with the Yamaha Stomp !!!!

I'd recommend looking into the TC electronics G major. This is pure effects (not distortions and fuzzes etc) just the effects. Very tweakable and very high quality.

I have a POD pro but the effects on the POD are less than adequate so I now run the POD for amp simulation only and the TC for any effects I may need.

I could of bought a BOSS GT6 but I find them to digital sounding plus the fact that there's so much it can do (which is off putting-all 'all in one' units have weaknesses).

The TC and GT6 are very similar in price here,

Argh. You beat me to it. The original poster mentioned an effects processor and tons of posts came out regarding modeling units. Maybe that's what the poster wanted. However, the G major is definitely one of the best pure guitar effects processors.

Alot of the pros have gotten away from effects processors and gone back to stomp boxes. They sound better, and they are way easier to set up on the fly. Build a good pedal board. I like Boss pedals, and Ibanez pedals are cool too. Check out www.pedalboard.com to see some pro effects set ups.

blue devil

dunno if this applies but I just bought this behringer amp called the blue devil...came with multi effects processor built in... works pretty rad...I only have to get the dam footboard now...but ya highly recommended...60 watt rms with a 100 watt speaker...effects and all fer 500$ plus GST (ya thats canadian) check it out at behringer.de

Just got my Digitech RP100 in the mail today...

OK, so I don't have $300+ to plunk down on the GNX2.. The RP100 has many of the same features as the GNX2, maybe just pared down a bit..

I was a little hesitant about buying it because I was afraid everything would come out sounding like a POD.. And although, yes, there are a couple amp simulators that sound POD-ish, I am very happy with my purchase.. Overall, most of the presets have tweakable potential; I can use the drum loops for practicing (as opposed to my very unloud metronome) and don't need to waste drum machine patterns; I have the option of making the "amps" sound direct or with different mic placements (pretty good learning tool); and it has all the other goodies that were mentioned in the original post..

I plan on using the RP100 in conjunction with my Crate amp and then micing the results, because that's as close as I'm going to get to owning an expensive rig.. and I don't have enough time on this planet to wait around to afford the real Marshall's, Fender Twin's and Vox's..

So, if you can afford about $100, at least look into the RP100.. And I wouldn't recommend buying the RP200 because it seems there isn't that much extra for the difference in price..

GT-6

I found a very cool setting up on the GT-6 users group.

I set the expression pedal so that it added pre-amp gain & chorus as you pressed down on the pedal. You go from clean to megapunch and then back...

Anyone else tried this with theirs?

The NanoDyne Ultra 4582 is a real nice guiffects unit.

If you can find one used, since they are out of production,anIbanez pt-5 is a cool unit.I don't know why they quit making it because it was one of the most user-friendly units I have ever owned.I wish I hadn't sold it now,but I was in a tight spot for cash back then.If you see one you ought to check it out.You can't judge it by any of the factory presets though.

The Best guitar FX units I would say are the POD2 and The oberhiem! The Oberhiem has the best quality (studio quality) sound while the POD doesnt have as good a sound as the Oberhiem but has a very good floor board that is better than that of the oberhiem and also is more usable and easier to configure and set up!

Take a look at the write up on harmony central on the oberhiem!!

The RP100 is a nice little device, especially for the price!

There's a good amound of effects and even more tweakable amp modeling parameters. You can get a fairly decent tone from it. Also, the drum patterns rock for practicing. The RP100 kicks my Korg Pandora PX3's ass based on tone and especially based on drum sounds. The RP100 drums sound halfway decent while the PX3's drums are very weak.

The PX3 gets a bit of a benefit for being able to select a key with a (cheesy) bass tone/pattern to practice with. It also gets a benefit for being more portable.

Both units are great practice units because they include simple drums which make practicing more enjoyable.

The main downfall of the RP100 is that the parameters do not contain real values. They merely run from 1-100. Thus, it is difficult to dial in a specific delay time. Also, it is difficult to determine the bpm of the drums.

All in all, though, the RP100 is an excellent device for the price!

Indeed. I've got a G-Major, and it is great! You can even use it as an PA or studio effect! Go and check it out!
