Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but between recording the never-ending album (up to almost 20 songs recorded), and performing, and dealing with recording industry people I just never get time to myself, or on the net, anymore. And having a blazing 28.8 modem connection here doesn't help.

Anyways, this song is fresh from being mixed yesterday. It is kind of quiet, but it will be mastered along with others later, so we don't look at the volume of individual songs. Any comments would be great, and if you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks guys,
H2H

The song is called "Fly"

That sounds good as hell.

are the (what i'm assuming is the chorus) chorus drums real or samples?

but defiantely i love the mix. sounds great over here for the most part.

man that guitar part is so simple and yet ......i cant get it out of my head.......great job......vocals are impressive as well....nice.....it seems like the sound decreases considerably in the chorus?...is it just me?..... ...
.....man i really like it tho.....the vocals really sound good.....

excellent

The chorus drums are real (and a really great drummer). The producer likes the idea of mixing loops with live drums, I had never done it before, but it seems to work here.

Thanks for the response!

jamal, once the mastering engineer gets ahold of the final product, they will compress the song so that it is even throughout. We just haven't gotten that far with it yet.

Thanks!

aw jeeez......

........i wish i had an engineer......:D

....really tho great song......

this really has a pro sound to it.my ole lady loves it.the only thing i dont like are the real bassy rumblings.the chick has such a nice vox its just a shame to put whats expected in there.
i like the guitar line.kinda catchy.
lose the rap shit (bass)and i will buy a copy

sheppard, your comments are appreciated.

The producer has worked with many R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap/and pop groups so that background naturally translates into our music. :)
His previous efforts include PM Dawn, Blessid Union of Souls, Carole King, George LaMond, among others.

Thanks!

thats an awesome song and production, Mike.....things seem to be coming along well.....i want my copy of the CD autographed...:D :D :D :D

This sounds great. The song is really nice and the playing is top notch.

I don't know if this belongs in a forum for "home recorders" ie, amateurs working mostly on their own. From what I gather this is a full fledged session recording, done at a pro studio with a pro engineer and a pro producer and set to be mastered by a mastering studio by a pro masterer (?).

Don't get me wrong- maybe we should have a forum on here that would be right for people to get feedback on their professionally done studio stuff.

If I'm wrong about the pro studio stuff and this was done in your bedroom/basement/office/garage just tell me to F off.

Great tune and sound though! I'm probably just jealous.

Thanks for the support Gidge! We're giving it all we got!

jjt- I understand where you're coming from, but I have posted songs and reviewed songs here for years now, and many of these guys know how terrible some of my earlier efforts were (I started on a Tascam 424). But the cool thing is that all of the things I learned right here at HR.com allow me to have alot of input and get alot of respect at recording sessions we do.
And to be quite honest, many of the "home" recorders here have even nicer gear than what we used on this song. To be completely fair, here's the (rather UN-impressive:)) signal chains.

It is all in Pro Tools using Digi 001's for the tracking. Vocals were with a Blue Mouse and a Sytek 4 channel pre. The acoustic guitar, same thing, a cheap Martin DM was used. Loops are the same crap anyone could get. Bass is a Danelectro Hoodad (is that the name?) thru the same Sytek. Drums are a very good session drummer. I can't tell you all the mics, because I wasn't there when they did drums (we were playing out of town) but I CAN tell you LOTS of channels were used. There were 2 room mics, an old ribbon mic used, a bass mic contraption, which is actually a speaker woofer mounted by rubber bands in a laundry hamper frame, all in addition to normal drum micing...like 14 tracks for the drumkit alone. A Mackie 3208 is the mixer there...we actually tracked it in the producer's basement, his "home" studio, and this is just all the stuf he has there.

Thanks for listening everyone!

hmmm, reminds me a *lot* of sublime - what I got.

sounds pertty decent though.

I suppose they rippped off the Beatles "Lady Madonna" also, cause that's pretty much what I thought of when writing this tune (the verses). :) I'm not familiar with their (sublime) music, but listen to the Beatles tune, then get back with me.

Sounds great, glad to hear things are looking up.
Not having the time to play on the computer is a good thing!:D

I like the little guitar ditty, very nice!

Well written,I especially liked the change at 2:00,really made the song.

Another great one, best of luck to you guys!:)

thanks muzeman. The break took the longest to perfect when I wrote this song. Fortunately, I wrote it about 5 months before actually recording, so we had time to get it right! :)

Il'l have this up a ilttle longer for you guys before (per the producers request) I yank it from the web. I just wanted some feedback from the people whose musical opinions I trust most.

Thanks,
H2H

the production is pretty good. I don't hear any Beatles in it though. But it's hard for me to hear any Beatles among loops and samples though too. Not thats its supposed to sound like the Beatles, but you mentioned Lady Madonna, and my ears aren't hearing it...the opening guitar reminded me of Maddona's hiy songs from a summer ago or so. That Dont tell me song of hers that has the guityar and edits in it.

But for what this song is, It sounds great. Its sounds very pro.

Nice tune..the coustic guitar and box beats sound just like the madonna tune that was released last year..ya know the one where she's wearing a cowboy hat kickin dust in the vid?

 I thought it was just me.. I also hear the 'sublime' reference that wes made..

sounds great though.. maybe the bass drum is a little low in some spots, and it sounds pretty compressed, but that's looking hard for things wrong.. It really sounds great for the most part.. very nice tune..

good luck with this!

Hey h2h,
.......very nice man....... ......VERY nice! I like the loop/live drummer exchange. ....sounds cool because only the sounds make it apparent...... .....it doesnt go from a real "techy" sound to real drums, it transitions very smoothly. The chic singin has a nice voice, and her bg's are smokin. I get the madonna vibe too. ......and i see where the sublime vibe is comin from in the groove.

........cool stuff man, best of luck to your success

Great song,I'd like to hear the vocals up more on the chorus, but that's just a personal preference.I love the acoustic breakdown/ending.
