Stop it, I can't breathe
I had a day off today and I decided to have some fun covering a song by the band of my lyricists, the Great Gonzo's. I would like to apologize to everyone from south america (brzlian) for attempting some totally fake salsa/samba (or whatever) without having the proper knowledge....

It's far from finished but hey, it's finished enough to upload. Otherwise I won't listen to your comments, because I think it's finished hehehe :)

The lead vocal part is way too difficult (the highest note is actually the highest in my range) for my untrained voice so it's out of tune at times...I'll have to redo the lead after some heavy practicing. And I also need to tighten up (or leave out?) some harmonies, I know. Drumparts/fills need some work too.

This is a really fast mix. I was so stoked about this cover, I just had to upload it....

The original version is on the page too (with the prefix 03). Interesting note: I 'produced' and recorded the original version.

O, and I know it sounds a lot like a Jellyfish song...I discovered it when I had almost finished the damn song. So let's call it a tribute to Jellyfish... :)

Very tastey. I like the mix? I can't hear anything out of place. A very distinctive style to it also.

I don't really hear much salsa/samba here but it sounds really good whatever you wanna label it.

Center vocal could come up a bit.

Vocals are really good, but the instrumentation is the strength of this tune IMO. Really nice chord progressions. Great arrangement that actually gets better as it goes along.

Nice job man!

Thanks SLuiCe and Smokepole!

I have no idea what style I'm doing here, it sounds vaguely south american and I'm beating a 2:3 clave rhythm somewhere (that's the only thing I know) so that's why I thought it could be a samba or salsa. I should learn some more about it before I start recording stuff like this.

Yeah, I know...the lead is too soft.....I felt ashamed about it. I'll redo it...when I feel good about it I should be able to mix it much louder.

Be sure to check out the original, it can be quite a surprise!

I can't believe how the harmony vocal at the end got so slow....it's.....like....d'Angelo....is ...singing....it......man....definitely need to tighten that up)

Anyway, it's a great song (good one, Bas!). My first attempt was a slick Kylie Minogue-ish disco version, btw. Unfortunately the file got corrupted :( On the other hand this version is much, much better.... :)

Dude! Do you just record all day? This was very nice. Really liked the vocals. Nice harmonies.

Very nice-Good melody nice sounds good mix. I like the breakdown with nylon string guitar..Vocals and vocal layering sound good again. There was one drum lick early that gave away the programmed drums and the cymbals sound a bit "hyped",well maybe thats a bad word-just not like real cymbals, thats the price you pay for such perfect drum sounds I guess...Thats the only critique I can think of...alot to like here-the single note counter melody during the verse is nice. Did I hear a guitar solo? I dont think so? Sounds like the LV gets a little buried here and there ~1:00 mark for example. The latin percussion is interesting-though the song sounds about as Latin as bluegrass performed on an iceberg. Sounds great to me Tjark-you got your thing down for sure, listened to this a bunch-very enjoyable song-performance-mix.

Thanks Strato!

I know exactly what you're talking about, the drum fill I mean. I should fix that. The lead and the volume of the lead also....

As far as I'm concerned, there's no guitarsolo? :) Perhaps you imagined it? Is it good?

I think I can make the cymbals sound more real by slightly overcompressing them a little....not sure..working with samples this good is quite new for me. I'm not used to 30 second samples, tend to forget to let them ring all the way through. I just hit the note for a short time, and think it's ok. I should leave my finger on a little longer....

But I'll try to fix it, OK?

This is great. The songwriting and arranging is very well done. Doesn't really sound like Jellyfish to me, the beginning sort of seemed like Jobim and Gilberto. The sound is a little synthetic for my taste, makes the recording seem more demoish then it would be otherwise, I think. Singing is great, all around, good music!

Almost sounds like the Moody Blues. A fine recording and a nice song. I don't hear much that needs improvement. Fine vocal as well.

Hi there, I'm one of the guys that writes lyrics for trojka and I am a member of the Great Gonzo's. I just heard trojka's version of our song today and I must say: it's tha bomb. Funny thing is that we (that is the band) rearranged it ourselves recently (this one of our old songs) inspired by an early trojka attempt to do this song. Our version now sounds like Soundgarden meets Goldie, but trojka's cover is in a league of it's own. "Chapeau" as the french say...
Anyone interested in a the Great Gonzo version of "Van jou een vrouw" mail me on m.vanmoort@wxs.nl

Thanks Macle....well, I don't wanna shove it up your throat with a sample or anything but the Jellyfish song is Bedspring Kiss. The exact same chord progression in the verses. :)

lovely. your voice has a really clean thin quality that works well with the arrangement; i'm sure you know that i like stuff a little more dirtied... i'm trying to balance the energy/clarity quotient in my own stuff.

i'm still partial to your rendition of "see if you swim" :^)

Goddamm! This sounds extremely cool! If I just understood the lyrics... :D

Kind of like I'm able to touch the feelin of the sound.....

Learn me how to produce like this! :D

nice recording.. the vocals sounded a bit low in spots, but the performance was good.. I really like the music..

Really easy to listen to. Love the drum sound. Great vox even if I couldn't understand a word.

It's the Sonic Implants Blue Jay Drums soundfont, isn't it Ed? ;)

Thanks Mutok, Moskus & B. Sabbath

Just redid the whole lead, it seems like this time it's good enough to mix it LOUDER! :D

I'll fix some drumfills first before I post a remix. You can expect it this week though.... :)

To answer your question, Moskus: to produce something like this, you need a couple of hours, 6 miditracks (shameless spam: all soundfonts supplied by Sonic Implants) and 35 audiotracks. Record all parts real fast, then spend a couple of hours on programming the drumpart alone ; ) If you need to sing a harmony vocal, triple every part you sing. Make it massive. If you play a guitarpart, double it with a different sound & pan it somewhere else. Repeat this procedure if necessary. Compress the shit out of the bass, and add some low end distortion. Don't be shy with the reverbs & delay and equalise your ass off to give everything its place... :D

Very cool, when's the english version coming out?
Is that an accordian?
