What exactly is this piece of gear?

What exactly is the little white box sitting on the console? Not sitting on top of the meter bridge, but the one sitting in the center. I see this all the time in pictures of studios, and I never knew what it was.

I've seen them too. If memory serves (not perfect) its a Lexicon reverb. 80's tech, but they sound great, and stay in use.

I was thinking a lexicon remote control, the reason for the remote was that the reverb was in a big box out of the way somewhere.

The second thing I was thinking was it was some kind of remote / synchroniser unit for controlling tape machines, the timecode would be on the display (red part).

Mine is a dark grey easily confused for black.

But I have seen them in whitish grey as well.
