what effect will a stucco ceiling have on sound waves in my room

I've read through a bunch of threads and got some great tips on soundproofing. This is my first post/question so be gentle

So I'm on my way to treating my room which is about 12 x 9. Wall treatments are going up and I'm making some removable basstraps as well. My question is what to do for the ceiling? I have stucco on the ceiling, what effect will it have on my sound treatment?

Not enough to make much of a difference. A slight scattering in extremely high frequencies.

I doubt you are 'soundproofing' your room. You're making it better for listening/recording/mixing when adding traps, etc. You may want a trap/cloud over your mixing area, or over the drums if you have them in that room.

Hey Henry,
There's a big old "let me see your studio" thread in here somewhere. Take a look through some of the pics and see what ideas you get.
You can be sure if there's anything stupid done in there, someone will have commented.

What are the dimensions of the room?
What you using the room for?
More often than not you will benefit from a ceiling cloud above your listening position

Sound won't get stucco to it if that's what you were hoping!

Like Massive Master said - MAYBE a little high freq scattering but your best bet it to pretend the surface is smooth & move on from there.

Maybe a second question while I'm at it, I'm building my own panels using wood frames and rock-wool. I had a bunch of left over material I was going to use to cover up the boxes (kind of like a fake fur lining you find in jackets....with a leopard pattern ) Will this impede the sound from getting through and being absorbed?

Yes, you want 'transparent' (to sound) material. That's why an open weave material like burlap is best.

Caution - Bulk burlap stinks like hell until it airs out!

Most cottons and polyester's are also breathable. You can go to your local fabric shop and pick from there

So what's the best way to find a nice-looking material suitable to cover bass traps - hold it up to the light to see if you can see an open weave? Local Super Walmart has a huge materials section.

Fake fur lining is actually very breathable! It will be just fine for your traps... Just be sure that's what you want to look at 5 years from now.
Remember, there is always more than one way to skin a cat.
