What does everbody use for a bass Pre amp?

When I'm not micing the cabinet (or in addition to) I really like the Groove Tubes Ditto box. Great DI with tubes and 30db of gain, for around 300 clams. I also use the DI capabilities on a Great River MP1NV, and Peavey VMP2.

If you have a problem with your mixing skills, buying a U5 won't help.

Practice practice and practice. I need to take my own advice. :D
Yes i agree. I do spend quite a bit of time practicing. First I spend hours trying to get the right tone from my pre and bass. Then hours trying get the bass track played right. And then days trying to get it to sit in the mix right. I also think my bass has a lot to do with my sound. Sometimes I think it sounds a bit unfocused and a bit weak on the C/G/D strings. I'm currently in the process of getting a new onboard pre-amp that should help out those strings as well as my overall tone.

Also, I have yet to try micing my cab. What would be a good mic to use, the selection I have are the NTK, D112 and SM57?

All could work depending on the sound you're after, so try them all, but since the D-112 is intended for low frequencies I'd suggest you start with that.

Avalon U5, with a Symetrix 501 (if needed)...90% of the time I'm there, for the other 10% I'll eventually get around to buying a small rig for the studio, probably a Polytone.

Buying a U5 WILL help any problem you may have. Usually buying anything will help any problem you have. Ask any woman shopper.

At the moment a Sansamp Bass DI without speaker simulation into a vintage Spectrasonics 8-channel mixer. From the stereo out it goes into a Creamware A16 U ADDA.

This was the best way for me on the project going on now. I also had a great result at the tests with the Sansamp going through a AD&R Compex with no compression, just coloring.

Haven't tried the speaker simulation of the Sansamp with this setup yet but I'm quite sure it will be just great.

A Rickenbacker 4001 is used and these are a bit harder to work with compared to for example a Fender bass in my opinion, not now! Sounds awesome...

Several months ago I got a demeter hm1. I got it because I wanted a good quality stereo tube pre (and I got it for a very good price).

I was not disipointed with the pre end of things, but I was shocked with the quality of the DI. The first time I used it, I was recording a bass player that I had recorded several times before. When he started to play, he quickly stopped and asked me what I did to the bass. He was very impressed.

The Demeter unit is the only DI that I actually prefer by times to miking electric guitar as well.

IMHO this DI smokes my grace, focusrite, and dbx units I have.

I normally use either my GT Vipre or API 3124+. I prefer the sound of Fender Jazz > API > HD.

I've gotten great results going direct from a 15" Peavey amp. But isn't going direct the same as using a Sansamp..and maybe even with more flexibility/variety?

I use an Ampeg SVT3-Pro Head and a 4-10 Cab.....
This rig sounds so bitchen and has a line out w/ level, pre & post,
XLR & 1/4" outputs staight into the board.......
Dosn't get much better than this......lol

We go like this.

Bass -> Signal Splitter -> Sansamp Bass Driver ->Mesa Basis M2000 with 2 4X10 cabs and an Ampeg SVT-2 Pro and Classic 8X10 cab

Now i usually put one direct bass sound from the splitter straight into the Ampeg, and the output signal from the Sansamp into the Mesa. Then i put one Sennheiser E602 and SM57 on each cab (ore the 609 on one mesa 4x10 and the 57 on the other) and take DI signals from both amps and from the Sansamp, Record them all down then mix the sound and bounce to a signel or multiple tracks depending on the song and the bass performance. And i always get the exact right sound for any style out of that lot, maybe and usually not by using all of the available signels, but it gives me plenty of options.

DMP3..Bass Pre-Amp

...I'm using the DMP3 on everything these days.....
it really added to my Bass sound, working with a Yammie MD8.

Instrument input on Avalon AD2022. No compression, no Eq, straight to the recorder. Works great, requires almost no screwing around to get good clean sound. I think the DI circuitry in the AD2022 is basically the same as the U5.-Richie

Sebatron 4000e DI is my current first choice. Sometimes the MP-2NV (DI) takes the cake.

Dude, thanks for reminding me of the logic I'm s'posed to use ... now I can justify buying that Pedulla Buzz bass I've been drooling over for months! :D

Then I'd run it thru my Dan Alexander racked 1073 Neve instrument input. It's the only pre I have besides a MindPrint DI Port and the stock Digi 001 pres. I figure I don't deserve anymore pres at this point.

But I deserve that bass ....

at present my options are limited, but i got my hands on a dbx 163x.... not nescesarilly the cleanest sound but definalty FAT

I have been using a Peveay Sessionbass for years, and I have been very pleased with it. The head has a XLR, post-eq direct out with lots of punch. This amp works great for accoustic guitars too.
