I would like to start recording at home... Im new to recording so I was wondering all the basic things i would need to start.

I would be recording onto my computer and most likely be using a program like cubase .. Im also intrested in recodring surround sound, would you need any different equipment for that?

I'd need to be able to hook up at least 6 mics too (drum tracks)

Thanks alot for any help :)

basic parts to a good studio:

recorder (in your case, a pc)

mics (I love my at3035)(and get a pop filter)

instruments (of course)

mixer

lots of cables

equalizer (could be a plug in)

compressor/gate (could be a plug in)

preamp

headphones

nearfield monitors (you'll need an amp if they're passive)

sound proofing (foam, fiberglass. If you want to make it completely isolated and sound proof, it's cost thousands.)

If any of that doesn't make sense, PM me.

Hope that helps!

instruments to mics, mics to preamp (such as presonus firepod), preamp to computer recording program (such as cubase).. am i missing something in between?....
if the computer program has built in mixers, equilizers and compressors, etc... would i still need the external ones? I'm guessing the effects on the computer program are only for mastering?

thanks again

A. Depends
B. No

For now just get your feet wet, it takes a long time to learn cubase thoroughly. All those programs are very powerful stuff

For a quick FREE start up try KRISTAL. I am using it and getting some good sounds. I have a Behringer Mx 802A mixer (One I ran my keyboard through when I was in my last band) 3 mic's two SM58 style and one 57 style...I need better mic's but these work and that is it.

I'd assume you already have a PC (or Mac) since your posting here. Even with the lamest computer you can record a few tracks.

Mostly, it depends on what you want to do. You mentioned recordin 6 mics; I'd recommend the Presonus (sp?) Firebox. IIRC it has 6 or 8 XLR inputs with phantom power. A lot of users have had success with this module, just do a search you'll see (haha, probably some of my posts too!) this way you can get your 6 drum mics and then 2 more.

the Presonus Firepod is pretty amazing...especially for the money. I sold my Digi 002 and got one, and am having wayyyy better results. It's so easy and with 8 phantom powered inputs/pre's it's a steal. Very easy for beginners, it doesn't have any cumbersome patchmix software. get that and some cheap but good mics...a couple 57's and a pair of rode nt5's would do nicely.
